Serious Obama defends his policies on "The Daily Show"

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama targeted young voters on Wednesday with a robust defense of his policies and promises in an appearance on the popular comedy program "The Daily Show."

Obama, whose Democrats are expected to suffer big losses in Tuesday's congressional elections, was light on jokes but heavy on policy as he said it would take time to fulfill the pledges he made during the 2008 presidential campaign.

"When we promised during the campaign 'change you can believe in,' it wasn't 'change you can believe in 18 months,'" he told the host, Jon Stewart.

Current and former teachers came out in force at the October board meeting to support a cadre of their out-of-work colleagues who feel they were unfairly labeled as “not recommended” when they tried to reapply for jobs this summer.

CPS officials confirmed in September that they had National Board Certified teachers review applications and label them with “recommended,” “not recommended” and “recommended with reservation.” Officials said about half of the applications, some of which came from recently laid-off teachers were labeled as not recommended or recommended with reservations.

Though CPS said that principals could decide on their own whether to take heed of the labels, teachers say they have felt it prevented them from getting hired.

Poor Miss Crabtree. She's getting married, and she has to leave her job. Such things happened back in the day, before anyone thought of equal rights for women, tenure, or indoor plumbing.

Nowadays we no longer insist teachers take chastity vows, remain unmarried, fill the inkwells, clean the coal boilers, or do whatever else they did in the good old days. Still, without tenure Miss Crabtree could now be fired for some more contemporary reason. Perhaps she told her colleagues how much UFT teachers earn. Or maybe she insisted they provide services mandated for special education students. Maybe she didn't do anything and they took the word of an angry student over hers. Perhaps they posted her scores (despite an explicit agreement not to -- how can anyone trust these folks?) and decided to discontinue her, rendering her license useless in NYC. These things happen when teachers don't have tenure.

Yet, I keep hearing, tenure is evil. Why? Because there are bad teachers out there! If you watchWaiting for Superman, you may walk out thinking they all hide behind the skirts of evil AFT
