California typically lands at or near the bottom in virtually every measure of public school performance nationally, but the academic content taught to the state's schoolchildren is second to none, according to a study released Tuesday. That status has left the Golden State with a conundrum. To be more competitive for federal Race to the Top funds, the state must adopt common standards in English, math and other subjects to be in sync with most other states.

California Teachers Fund Earns 12% After Record Loss Last Year

July 19 (Bloomberg) -- The California State Teachers’ Retirement System, the second-biggest U.S. public pension fund, earned 12.3 percent in the year ended June 30, led by gains in stocks and bonds that offset losses in real estate.

Calstrs, as the Sacramento-based fund is known, ended the fiscal year with $129.8 billion under management, up from $118.8 billion a year earlier. Stock holdings earned 14.5 percent and its bonds rose 12.3 percent, the fund reported today. Investments in private equity funds rose 21.7 percent, while real estate fell 12.4 percent.

A scandal-plagued Queens charter school fired at least nine teachers Tuesday - via FedEx, union officials said.

Some of the Merrick Academy staffers who got the boot are chalking it up to a bitter contract dispute between the school and unionized teachers.

"If the board of the Merrick charter school is firing teachers because of union activity, then we're going to take all legal action against them," said United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew.
