First off, note that less than one in three UFT members voted at all. In any election, low turnout gives an exaggerated voice to the most disgruntled and ideological. In union elections, where veterans have more at stake, low turnout also concentrates influence among senior members invested in preserving perks and protections.

Middle school students can take enrichment classes this summer at the El Dorado Center of Folsom Lake College in Placerville.

The series, called the Intensive Summer Enrichment Experience, includes courses in astronomy, multicultural art, drama, conversational Spanish, creative writing and Web design.

Classes are Monday through Thursday, June 21 to July 1.

The program is a partnership between the El Dorado County Office of Education and Folsom Lake College.

Here is a lesson in applied professional ethics that the prosti-suits who run the NEA and AFT need to learn from:

Teachers have voted unanimously for a national ban on national literacy and numeracy tests in public schools in protest against the federal government's My School website.
The Australian Education Union federal executive said today that teachers would not supervise the national tests scheduled for next month unless the federal government addressed teacher concerns about use of the data on the website.
The union's federal president, Angelo Gavrielatos, said teachers would not administer the tests
