In this week's New York Times, Motoko Rich described how many charter schools are now exclusively hiring teachers and principals in their early 20s who work for just two to three years before leaving education altogether. Instead of deploring this trend, charter programs have embraced a pool of eager, young, and idealistic college graduates, many in or fresh out of Teach for America, who are willing to work long, grueling hours for low pay and with no promise of a sustained career path.
The Times focuses on the resulting turnover and inexperience among these educators.Studies show that schools with high rates of teacher attrition perform poorly on average and that many educators don't hone their skills until their third year in the classroom or beyond. The Times article, however, neglects another downside to charters' emphasis on youthful hiring: Many schools launch with few or no adults on staff who know first-hand what it's like to be a parent.
If you aren't a parent, maybe this won't strike you as odd. It wouldn't have struck me that way more than 20 years ago when I joined Teach for America in the program's first year and taught for three years in New York City's public schools. I was single, childless, and clueless about even the most basic aspects of child-rearing. My students' parents seemed like creatures from another planet, remote and distant from the job I thought I was doing. The community of Bridgeport, CT has a very interesting race for school board that seems worthy of national attention as a microcosm of what's happening in communities across the U.S. The story that leads up to the election goes something like this:
 
About two years ago the mayor of Bridgeport, CT, Bill Finch, moved to disband the local elected school board in favor of a mayoral control structure, like what's happened in NYC, Philly, Chicago, and other urban cities. On a 6-3 vote the board agreed it was no longer able to function and a mayoral directed and appointed board was put in its place. Paul Vallas, previously the CEO of New Orleans schools, was brought in to serve as the interim Superintendent. In many communities the story stops there.
 
But in Bridgeport, a coalition of union, family, and community groups took the city to court stating that this was illegal and the town had to have control of its schools. They won. In a special election the board was put back in place, but again with a 6-3 majority that still favored an approach of more centralized control, charter schools, and an effort to break apart the teachers union.
 
The same community coalition also challenged in court that Superintendent Vallas did not have any of the qualifications needed to be in his position, possessing no degrees in education or the administrator's certificate required by state law. They won again. The mayor then coordinated a process where Mr. Vallas took an online course and fast-tracked a process to get an

If I Spoke At The 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington [Huffington Post]

Imagine if you asked me to be the people’s speaker at today’s commemoration of the 50th anniversary on the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Here’s some of what I would say.
“As an educator, I view the world through math, and the numbers look grim today. Unemployment still knocks the doors of too many of our poorest brothers and sisters while we lend out our collective fortune to investors who won’t invest in us. Incarceration rates have broken many a home and steered our most disenfranchised through revolving doors, ones that our country refuse to shut down. Our young people live through different justice systems, ones that depend on the color of their skin and the looseness of their threads. We are all human, all worth the skins, the minds, and the hearts that make us.”

Christine Quinn Is Pretty Sure It's OK to Cut Class

In a fairly amazing show of desperation, serial opportunist Christine Quinn is offering students excuse notes if they take offto work for her campaign. I've never heard of such a thing, and I've never seen a note from a politician saying Johny was absent because he was volunteering for a campaign. You certainly never saw that sort of thing from Emperor Mike, who could simply pull another million from his vest pocket and pay someone.

Here's what Quinn's staffer said:

“If you want me to be real for a second, a letter coming from the next mayor of New York City saying that you helped her on election day is something you can definitely put on your resume or application, and I’m pretty sure your teacher will be ok with you missing Tuesday, or even Monday and Tuesday,” he wrote.

I like that he says he's being real for a second. This gives us an enormous clue about what the Quinn team does the rest of the time. Perhaps their primary focus is ignoring polls that suggest Quinn's chances are something short
