In terminal one at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, right across from Chili’s, is a Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory shop, where they have a standing offer that you can buy three caramel apples and get a fourth one free. The apples are fresh and dipped daily, and are a tempting treat, but for many solo travelers it’s not possible to grab four caramel apples and run.

One traveler  ahead of me in line bought one caramel apple and ran off to his gate to catch his flight.

Another bought the four caramel apples and offered three to the next three of us in line she didn’t even know, just so she could get hers free.

We gladly took her up on her offer, and as she went on her way with our “thank yous” hanging in the air. The traveler who had been standing right behind me commented what silliness it was for

In our A City Education series, two City Year corps members share their experiences working as tutors and mentors in schools in hopes of closing the achievement gap and ending the dropout crisis.
I don’t remember what I did during my elementary school vacations. I probably hung out with one or two friends and spent the rest of my time watching television or reading. That is the title of this must read op ed in today's Nw York Times by Michelle Alexander.
Let me offer a couple of snippets.
AFTER years as a civil rights lawyer, I rarely find myself speechless. But some questions a woman I know posed during a phone conversation one recent evening gave me pause: “What would happen if we organized thousands, even hundreds of thousands, of people charged with crimes to refuse to play the game, to refuse to plea out? What if they all insisted on their Sixth Amendment right to trial? Couldn’t we bring the whole system to a halt just like that?”
And this:  
The Supreme Court ruled in 1978 that threatening someone with life imprisonment for a minor crime in an effort to induce him to forfeit a jury trial did not violate his Sixth Amendment right to trial. Thirteen years later, in Harmelin v. Michigan, the court ruled that life imprisonment for a first-time drug offense did not violate the Eighth Amendment’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment.

Let the testing begin! States have heightened attention on standardized testing as many states approach their scheduled testing dates.

Parents, community members, and taxpayers increase resistance and opposition:

Colorado parents are threatened with truancy if they decide to keep their students home on testing days. As of March 8, 2012, the news outlet was waiting for a school district response. Standing by on this development.

Illinois parent opts out yet again this year in a long drawn out process. Related
