Fresh from his video appearance promoting yahoo Kyle Olson and Islamophobe Juan William’s Anti-public Schools Week, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel went back to work and closed down Chicago’s libraries. Or at least closed them on Mondays.

Remember, it was just a month or so ago he got into it with the Chicago Teachers Union over longer school days.

Get it? More hours in school. Fewer hours in libraries.

Then, if you’re a true fan of irony, the Mayor removes all the chairs from the 5th floor of City Hall so that the elderly and handicapped who are sitting-in outside his office to keep some public schools open have to sit on the

ALBANY, N.Y. Jan. 6, 2012 - New York State United Teachers President Richard C. Iannuzzi and other educators who are working as partners to design rigorous teacher and principal evaluation systems will join forces Monday to oppose State Education Commissioner John B. King's decision to suspend School Improvement Grant (SIG) funding. They will specifically detail how SED's suspension of districts' SIG funding is hurting their most vulnerable students.
Labor and management representatives from many of the 10 districts receiving SIG funding will gather on the steps of the State Education Department Building, 89 Washington Ave., at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 9. The group will detail how SED's action is hurting students and how the state bureaucracy is frustrating local efforts at school improvement.

The Obama administration has yet to make an official decision on states' requests for waivers from the No Child Left Behind Act, the sweeping, and in many districts, deeply unpopular law.

But the reviews are in on New Jersey's waiver plan from one advocacy organization, which claims the plan would diminish resources going to needy schools—a charge rejected by the state.

The objections to New Jersey's plan were raised by the Education Law Center, which advocates for equal opportunities for students, particularly disadvantaged ones. The ELC, in a Dec. 22 letter to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, asks federal officials to defer making a decision on New Jersey's waiver until "several serious concerns are properly addressed by the state."
