      Incidence of ‘shaken baby syndrome’ and other head trauma almost doubled, study found.

      The stress of unemployment, foreclosures and putting food on the table may have helped drive a spike up in shaken baby syndrome and other types of abusive head trauma seen among infants and young children during the recent recession.

      A new study examined the rate of abusive head trauma seen among kids under age 5 in various U.S. locales from 2004 to 2009. Researchers found that the rate of such trauma rose from about 9 per 100,000 children to nearly 15 per 100,000 during that time period—coinciding with the onset of the recession and massive job

      Before publishing a story on immigration, every editor faces a question: What term should be used to describe an immigrant who is in the United States illegally?

      The AP Stylebook states that the preferred term is “illegal immigrant”—but that “illegal” should not be used as a noun.       California case law on the school parcel taxes and clever variations is surprisingly slim, considering that voters in more than 80 school districts have approved them. That’s why eyes are on Alameda Unified, the battleground over what constitutes a legal parcel tax.

      Last week, an Alameda County Superior Court judge gave the district its second victory in two years. Judge Frank Roesch ruled that Measure A, a $12 million parcel tax that voters narrowly approved in 2010, passed muster.

      It would be somewhat churlish to criticize any attempt to honor public school teachers just when they feel under assault by the modern school reform movement — including Monday night’s glitzy celebration for some D.C. teachers at the Kennedy Center.

      But it seems fair to ask whether a fancy event at the city’s leading arts venue — complete with big-time supporters (including The Washington Post Company) — is really the best or even appropriate way to celebrate teachers and their profession.

      Even The Economist has doubts about California’s privatization of public higher education:

      “In 1990 the state paid 78% of the cost of educating each student. That ratio dropped to 47% last year, and will fall even more during the current academic year, after the latest round of budget cuts, overseen by Jerry Brown, the current governor and son of Pat Brown. In some ways, California has now inverted the priorities of the older Brown’s era. Spending on prisons passed spending on universities in around 2004.”

      Steve Jobs with Apple has gotten on the ed reform bandwagon and is offering free iPads to Teach for America recruits but of course none to real teachers who have teaching experience, degrees in education and have devoted their lives to their school communities. Nope, this is for the TFA, Inc. recruits with five weeks of training to teach to the test and nothing more. I guess they need some sort of way to track all of those test scores.
