      Marion Brady offers us some words to chew over this morning:

      Kids can't be taught to think better using tests that can't measure how well they think.
      The logic should be obvious. What gets tested gets taught. Complex thinking skills -- skills essential to survival--can't be tested, so they don't get taught. That failure doesn't simply rise to the level of a problem. It's unethical.

      This is the reason so many of us are so fed up that we will take our own money and time to go to Washington, DC, next week to protest.

      Test-based accountability has taken our schools and made it their central mission to increase test scores. No Child Left Behind did this through labeling of entire schools as failures, and the Obama administration has

      COLUMBUS, Ga. --

      Outrage and shock is how Muscogee County School District's chair Cathy Williams described her reaction to the preliminary Adequate Yearly Progress results.

      "We need to stop the insanity," Williams said, echoing Diane Ravitch, one of the architects of No Child Left Behind (the public policy behind AYP).Ravitch is now telling the nation she got it wrong.

      "It's a very, very flawed public policy," Williams said. "I wish somebody would tear it up."

      Bill Gates is sober—and willing to admit some missteps. -- WSJ

      In today's Wall Street Journal interview, power philanthropist Bill Gatescomplains that all of his brilliant school reform ideas have been "met with resistance" from unions and "a top-down government monopoly provider." Don't you love how Gates (who himself was found guilty of operating a monopoly) and WSJ have suddenly become anti-monopoly critics when it comes to public education?

      In the interview, Gates admits that the investment he and other power philanthropists have made in corporate-style school reform, "hasn't led to significant improvements."

      Actually, one of those reforms was showing significant improvement until Gates began investing in it. Gates money turned a promising small-schools movement into a charter school privatization initiative. The foundation pulled
