    BOISE, Idaho — At least three states are vowing to ignore the latest requirements under the No Child Left Behind law in an act of defiance against the federal government that demonstrates their growing frustration over an education program they say sets unrealistic benchmarks for schools.

    The law sets a goal of having 100 percent of students proficient in math and reading by 2014, but states were allowed to establish how much schools must improve each year. Many states saved the biggest leaps for the final years, anticipating the law would be changed.

    But it hasn't, and states such as Idaho, Montana and South Dakota are fed up. They are preparing to reject the latest requirements for determining school

    Three years ago, President Obama boldly proclaimed that the United States would have the highest percentage of citizens with college degrees in the world by the year 2020. To get there, we need to address a few things. One, we need to reduce the college dropout rate (with more than one in three failing to graduate college within six years of entering). Second, we need to get more kids in the pipeline, increasing those entering and thus increasing those successfully completely. And third, we need to make sure that students have the funding to actually seek and complete a college degree, a challenge proving more difficult in our struggling economy.

Answer: Probably not, any more than Rupert Murdoch himself, actually passed envelopes fill with Euros to Scotland Yard cops. I doubt that either Thomas or Penny Sue, for example, would even know where the heater switch was. They have bigger fish to fry.

Here's what we know for sure: Stand For Children's behavior over the past year is worth, at a minimum, a review by IRS or the Department of Justice, or both. Everyone knows this; everyone's sort of dancing around it, and it's obviously the reason that Aspen "Ideas" scrubbed their site.

    What could be more admirable than an attempt to improve school meals? And making a profit by doing that can only be beneficial to everyone, right?

    That’s what San Francisco Bay Area-based Revolution Foods has convinced a lot of people, anyway. The private-sector enterprise has won acclaim for supposedly bringing better, healthier, fresher school meals to school cafeterias.

    Only trouble is, Revolution Foods claims that it can do that for the amount public schools receive from the government for school meals are untrue – which has caused some problems with its clients.

    Decent work? Some days, it sounds like an oxymoron, doesn’t it? It also brings to mind an old saying, favored by the AFL-CIO’s late president, Lane Kirkland, that if work were so great, the rich would have kept it for themselves.

    But the truth is that work is one of life’s realities. For most people, it is the sole source of income. Work also can bring great personal satisfaction. Whether self-employed or working for a large multinational corporation, we all aspire to jobs that are interesting, safe, and pay a good wage with benefits – a job that can support a family, with something left over. Even these days, when people are happy to have ANY job, we still want THAT kind of a job: Decent work at decent pay.

    But “decent work” is much more than a daydream – it is a concrete social and economic policy issue that is at
