I was at a social justice conference on Saturday and heard a great deal of concern related the ethical breach created when children and teachers are evaluated using a standardized test. What was missing in the discussion, however, was an understanding of how the "new and improved" version of pre and post testing represents just another in a long line of pseudo-scientific impositions that eventually ended up in the dustbin of technocratic ed interventions.

The excerpted piece below that appears in Change helps to add some much-needed technical clarity to a policy that is dangerous for many other reasons than the ones laid out here based on technical non-feasibility and the inherent messiness of application venue for a method that would be much easier to apply to, let's say, an agricultural experiment (perhaps that is where the mad Dr. Sanders should return).

Oshkosh teachers union leader punished for emails


OSHKOSH — The president of the Oshkosh teachers union received an unpaid suspension because he used district email to encourage others to use sick leave for joining political protests in Madison.

Oshkosh Education Association president Len Herricks sent a letter to all union members on Thursday in which he revealed at least part of his punishment and acknowledged his use of email was inappropriate.

"It's a decision for which I've taken responsibility and have accepted school board disciplinary action that includes an unpaid suspension," Herricks wrote.

The union president sent multiple emails beginning on Feb. 16 to all district staff encouraging them to call in sick and join him at demonstrations protesting a bill that limits

Opting out of No Child Left Behind tests

STATE COLLEGE, PA (POOL/CNN) -

Some parents now opt their kids out of standardized tests, saying they aren't accurate measures of accomplishment and are used to punish schools.

Third graders in State College, Pennsylvania are pouring over their standardized exams and the text books they used to prepare for them are as big as some of the kids.

As students dug in, a fellow classmate happily constructed Lego's.

Neither he nor his big brother, working on an independent study, took the test after their parents said 'forget it.'

"I believe that they're hurting not just my children. But children across the country," their mother, Michele Gray, said.

She is opting them out of the two-week long standardized tests, required of every public school under the No Child Left Behind Act.

It's a controversial law aimed at making sure schools measure up.

The opt out parents said the tests have too much riding on them, forcing teachers to spend way too much time teaching the test.

College students are finding a cautionary note on financial aid letters this spring -- and its origin is the budget bill House Republicans approved last month. Financial assistance, schools are explaining, could change based on what happens in Congress. And it won't be for the better.

Pell Grants, which help students pay for higher education, are on the chopping block to the tune of 15%.

College students aren't the only ones who should be worried. No age group has been spared Republicans' education budget ax -- from toddlers in early learning programs to young adults pursuing higher education.

At the ASCD Convention this afternoon, Brenda Hales of the Utah Department of Education gave a presentation titled, “Rolling Out the Common Core Standards.” It’s a topic that I’ve been wrestling with recently, and about which I wrote a recent blog post. I’m not convinced that the common core standards are necessary, and not convinced that they will lead to good outcomes.

But then, even setting aside concerns about the necessity or effectiveness of these standards, I’m deeply, deeply skeptical that, with politicians in charge, we have much chance of avoiding the worst possible abuses of the standards. The potential for narrowed curriculum and punitive ratings and rankings is all too real, and the huge amounts of money that will flow away from classrooms and schools should concern any school stakeholder, or tax payer.

Brenda Hales said all the right things for someone in her position. The Common Core Standards is not a national requirement. It’s not a national curriculum. It will help ensure that students in all (participating) state
