California’s State Board of Education will be revisiting the “parent trigger” law in their meeting this week, and newspaper editorial boards up and down the state are opining in favor of keeping the law in place. Their uniform opinion is generally uninformed in a few key regards:

1. It’s wrong to assume that we can identify which schools are underperforming with enough precision.

2. It’s not real parent empowerment.

3. The solutions don’t address the problem, or offer better chances of success.

Before tackling those three ideas in greater detail, I must say I have great sympathy for parents who might be looking for greater input in their children’s schools, and who might be frustrated at the lack of options. My opposition to the parent trigger idea shouldn’t be construed as a teacher siding against parents. (I have two sons in public elementary schools). 2010 was a banner year for bunk, leading to a new record of 24 reviews. Yet our awards can recognize only the true crème de la crème of bunkiness. This year’s victors include contributions from perennial frontrunners like Fordham, Heartland, and Heritage, but surprise winners included the South Carolina Policy Council Education Foundation, which until now had toiled unrecognized in the minor leagues. And we also were compelled to open the contest to an important new competitor – the U.S. Department of Education – which seems poised to contribute exceptional bunk for the foreseeable future.

One-stop shopping for evolution resources

In the last two years, the NCSE has reached out to members, the public, and the press, via YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and other digital tools. Keeping track of all these venues can be daunting. Fret no more!

Today we're unveiling a new Multimedia page that pulls together our videos (speeches, interviews, tutorials, and more), audio/podcasts (from radio interviews to classic hits such as the Miller-Morris debate), presentations (from creationist tactics to how to teach evolution), and charts/graphics (from relevant reports, surveys, academic papers, studies).

In short, it's one-stop info shopping for anyone who wants to follow the battle for evolution education in America.

Plan will pay for itself as schools re-enroll more students

February 7, 2011 (CHICAGO)--City Clerk and mayoral candidate Miguel del Valle visited the school he helped found more than 25 years ago to unveil his plan to re-enroll Chicago dropouts and, in the process, boost funding for the CPS system.

“Many students who have dropped out, or been pushed out, have left for a number of different reasons,” del Valle said at a press conference today at the alternative school El Cuarto Año in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. “Whatever the reason, we want to provide opportunities. Students need to be in the right program at the right time in the City of Chicago.”

Del Valle’s plan will implement an existing state-wide grant program in the City of Chicago. Between 14 and 20 schools, including neighborhood schools, will launch the program.

Last year, the National School Boards Association members gave Duncan grief after he he tangled with them over his support of mayoral control.

Governor Christie's determination to bust the teachers unions in order to privatize education is well known. Before becoming Governor, Chris "the Trenton outsider" Christie was a registered lobbyist. One of his biggest clients was Edison Schools Inc. a company seeking to transform public education into a private business. Christie also lobbied for University of Phoenix Online and represented Charter Schools in cases before the State Supreme court to protect their right to receive public funds. Julia Steiny worries that Common Core State Standards “will require students to read considerably less fiction.” The education columnist for the Providence Journal tells of being assigned James Agee’s novel A Death in the Family, by a 9th grade English teacher who wanted to exose her students to difficult experiences including grief. ”In her opinion, now mine,” Steiny writes, ”one of the great virtues of fiction is that it gives us the benefit of someone else’s experience, at the remove of fiction.”

Early last year, my colleague Robin Smiles and I published a report called Lowering Student Loan Default Rates. The report looked at the steps a consortium of six historically black colleges in Texas took a decade ago to reduce their student loan default rates. In the wake of the new three-year cohort default rates released by the Department of Education last week, it may be time for these, and many other, institutions to revisit the steps this group of small, private colleges took to successfully lower their default rates.

Overall, the default rate on student loans jumped from 7 percent under the two-year calculation to 13.8% under the three-year calculation – nearly double. And it’s not just for-profit colleges that may be in trouble. While colleges won’t be held accountable for the new, three-year cohort default rates until 2014, many will need
