Vouchers do poorly, do well, Just like public schools.

How are voucher schools doing against public schools in Ohio? The results again are mixed, and actual apples to apples comparisons still haven't been done. The Columbus Dispatch:
The statewide comparison of voucher to public-school students isn't all that usefull … It pits students who use vouchers to avoid academically troubled public schools against the entire state's public schools, most of

PEDAGOGY AND PROFITS: CHARTER SCHOOL BID RAISES QUESTIONS, September 21, 2010, City Limits Magazine (NYC, NY)

Upper East Side — A new charter high school proposed for Manhattan has close ties to a for-profit curriculum provider with family links to the chair of the state board that will decide on the school's application…

At the proposed New York Flex Charter High School, a company called K12 Classroom LLC will supply the curriculum to support that model, along with other services. The involvement of K12—whose chairman, Andrew H. Tisch, is the brother-in-law of New York State Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch—could be a test of the state's new charter-schools law, passed in late May, which forbids for-profit charter school management. At the very least, the proposal raises questions abo

WASHINGTON — Texas went to federal court today to pry loose $830 million in federal aid intended to help avert teacher layoffs.

The funds — Texas' share of a $10 billion jobs package Congressapproved last month — have been caught in a crossfire between Gov.Rick Perry and his Democratic critics in Congress, who inserted a provision requiring Texas to promise that its share of education spending won't be cut before 2013.

Perry says the state constitution precludes him from making such a promise. Two weeks ago, the Education Department rejected his application for the funds – enough to protect 14,500 jobs in schools statewide – saying it had to abide by the congressional mandate,

HISD chief academic officer to retire in December

Chuck Morris, who has served as chief academic officer of the Houston Independent School District since November, will retire this December. Shortly after taking over HISD, Superintendent Terry Grier recruited Morris to be his No. 2 her — the men had worked together in Guilford County, N.C., and in San Diego.

Morris, in confirming today that he planned to retire, said he had never intended to stay in Houston "real long term."

"I did what I was supposed to do in terms of helping with the reorganization and building the team," Morris said, referring to his oversight of switching HISD from a regional structure to one organized by grade level. "I've been in this business a long time, and we've put together the best team I've ever seen."

Grier has lost two other senior staff members: his first chief high school officer, David Simmons, who stepped down citing family issues, and his first pick for chief middle school

Should colleges stop legacy preference in admissions?

A new book on legacy preference in college admissions says that almost three-quarters of elite national institutions grant legacy preferences in admissions and that the advantage children of alumni can receive is often significant -- even if schools say otherwise.

The book, “Affirmative Action for the Rich: Legacy Preferences in College Admissions,” also says that legacy preferences do not result in

GOP Pledges to Reign in Spending, But Offers No New K-12 Ideas

Republicans say they'll crack down on spending, possibly even taking back unspent stimulus funds, if they're able to take over the U.S House of Representatives after the October midterm elections. That's according to a widely circulated draft of the GOP's Pledge to America, a sort of to-do list for Republican leaders being officially released today.

Here are some important graphs:

Act Immediately to Reduce Spending:There is no reason to wait to reduce wasteful and unnecessary spending. Congress should move immediately to cancel unspent "stimulus" funds, and block any attempts to extend the timeline for spending "stimulus" funds. Throwing more money at a stimulus plan that is not working only wastes taxpayer money and puts us further in
