"Jimmy Kimmel Live" returned from a short break last week just in time for all the back-to-school talk. Kimmel mentioned that due to budget restrictions in California, 16 school districts are cutting the school year by five days, which will save the state around $250 million. To get some inside information about the cuts, Kimmel checked out a video from California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger addressing just that. Let's just say, the governor relies on his past film credits to explain how he's going to "terminate" the budget problems with a two-day school week.

A former top education aide and campaign adviser to Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty is the subject of an investigation surrounding a contract she received after leaving her state job, a newspaper is reporting.

Chas Anderson, described as an influential voice on schools issues for the governor, had served as the state's deputy education commission under Pawlenty, where she guided many of his education initiatives, including a controversial alternative teacher compensation program, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. She left that post in June, and within a few days was given a $5,000 consulting contract to help the state write a grant

A Newark Public Schools official who helped present New Jersey's Race to the Top application in Washington, D.C., said today he flagged a crucial error less than a week before the presentation - but was told by consultants there was no chance to correct an answer after the deadline.

Dan Gohl, in charge of innovation and change in Newark schools, said he noticed the error six days before the presentation but he did not tell former Education Commissioner Bret Schundler or others in the state education department about the error.

Speaking at an Assembly committee hearing on the failed grant application, Gohl said he was told "anything that was submitted on June 1 timestamped a final document, and that's all we can speak to" in the presentation.

When asked why he didn't raise the issue with other officials in the state, Gohl

Many North Jersey teachers have been busy with a back-to-school ritual of their own — digging into their own pockets to stock up on star stickers, alphabet posters and the extras they say warm up their classrooms and motivate children.

Some said they even had to provide their students with the basics. Pam DiPrima said she scoured Staples and Office Depot for bargains on notebooks and pencils for her fourth-graders at School 2 in Paterson because otherwise they might never get such necessities.

"Sometimes they’ll say they can’t afford it or they’ll say, ‘My mom will get it when she gets paid,’ " said DiPrima, of Fair Lawn. "I want them to be prepared from Day One, and if I give it out, I know they’ll have it. There’s so much to cover you can’t miss a day."

Like many colleagues, she said she spent about $100 on back-to-school supplies. She said she expected to spend another $400 of her own money over the rest of

I know, I know. I'm always kvetching that schools need to do more with less. That superintendents aren't making the tough cuts. And, when they do, that they aren't cutting smart.
