Students from region can enroll in virtual school

Elk Grove Unified School District has opened enrollment for its first-ever virtual school.
Students attending the school will have all the supplies needed to finish a school year delivered to their doorsteps. They will learn most of their lessons at home, but will visit a campus for tests and to meet occasionally with a teacher.
The school is free and open to any student in grades K-12 in Sacramento County – along with students in Amador, Contra Costa, El Dorado, Placer, San Joaquin, Solano, Sutter and Yolo counties.
There will be informational meetings on the academy at Cosumnes Oaks High School, 8350 Lotz Parkway, Elk Grove at 9 a.m. Friday; Pleasant Grove Elementary School, 10160 Pleasant Grove School Road, Elk Grove, at noon May 17; Elk Grove Adult and Community Education, 8401 Gerber Road, Sacramento, at 4:30 p.m. May 25;

Along with the sunshine, the trees of Southside Park set the perfect scene for the ninth annual Passport to Summer Youth Fair on Saturday. At the event, dozens of booths showcased local activities and opportunities for youth during the summer while a main stage provided entertainment, games and raffles for the crowd.
The fair was sponsored by State Senator Darrell Steinberg, Assemblyman Dave Jones and Sacramento City Councilman Rob Fong. Steinberg stressed the importance of staying active during the summer when addressing the crowd.
"(The fair) is a time for us to see what we all have to offer," he said. "In these hard times, it's amazing to see the community come together." Steinberg also let loose on the dance floor by participating in a breakdancing lesson from the performers of Capitol Roots Studios.

Local hip hop dance crew Second Nature took the stage around noon and wowed the crowed with its intricate choreography.
The summertime activities represented at the fair ranged from biking to ballet, employment opportunities to science camps.

Angelica Rodriguez from Southgate Recreation and Park District was at the event promoting their R.E.C. (Recreation Engaging Children) Van. The R.E.C. Van is designed to travel to local parks with an array of group games and crafts for youth.

"It's vital for children to be active," Rodriguez said. "We want to make it easy and accessible for kids to stay

This month we have a powerful speaker, Janell Kubinec, Associate Vice President of School Services of California. She will provide an overview of current issues regarding California's funding of school districts, the management of state and federal categorical funds and the strategic use of these funding resources to maximize student achievement outcomes. Members from other school districts are welcomed.

Revised Bylaws

The bylaw convention was a success. They completed the revisions of the bylaws. They are attached for your review. We are very limited in time in this month’s meeting due to our guest speaker.

DAC Election

As DAC chair, I have been announcing for the last 3 months that the current DAC board officers will not be running for election next year. We have been actively recruiting DAC membership to consider being candidates. The current board would like to have the election in June 2010 to allow the new board to organize during the summer months. They will have the opportunity to develop their goals and timeline, instead of inheriting the old board’s agenda. We are asking the DAC membership to vote for a June election instead of a November election. Current DAC officers will complete their term by June 30, 2010; therefore there is a need to have elections. Attached is the Bylaw Committee Election process. Is there anyone else interested in running, please let me know.

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you. (Applause.) Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you, Hampton. Thank you, Class of 2010. (Applause.) Please, everybody, please have a seat.

THE PRESIDENT: I love you back. (Applause.) That's why I’m here. I love you guys.
Good morning, everybody.
AUDIENCE: Good morning.
THE PRESIDENT: To all the mothers in the house: As somebody who is surrounded by women in the White House -- (laughter) -- grew up surrounded by women, let me take a moment just to say thank you for all that you put up with each and every day. We are so grateful to you, and it is fitting to have such a beautiful day when we celebrate all our mothers. Thank you to Hampton for allowing me to share this special occasion -- to all the dignitaries who are here, the trustees, the alumni, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins -- that's a cousin over there. (Laughter).
Now, before we get started, I just want to say, I’m excited the Battle of the Real H.U. will be taking place in Washington this year. (Laughter.) You know I am not going to pick sides. (Laughter.) But my understanding is it’s been 13 years since the Pirates lost. (Applause.) As one Hampton alum on my staff put it, the last time Howard beat Hampton, The Fugees were still together. (Laughter.)
Well, let me also say a word about President Harvey, a man who bleeds Hampton blue. In a single generation, Hampton has transformed from a small black college into a world-class research institution. (Applause.) And that transformation has come through the efforts of many people, but it has come through President Harvey’s efforts, in particular, and I want to commend him for his outstanding leadership as well as his great friendship to me. (Applause.)
Most of all, I want to congratulate all of you, the Class of 2010. I gather that none of you walked across Ogden Circle. (Laughter.) You did? Okay.
You know, we meet here today, as graduating classes have met for generations, not far from where it all began, near that old oak tree off Emancipation Drive. I know my University 101. (Laughter and applause.) There, beneath its branches, by what was then a Union garrison, about 20 students gathered on September 17th, 1861. EUGENE -- A survey conducted by the executive committee of the UO Senate shows little support for a new labor union that could represent faculty and some administrators.

Those taking part in the unscientific e-mail poll opposed a union by a 2-1 ratio.

The Register-Guard newspaper reports that 45 percent of the 2,307 people who received a survey responded to it.

Faculty unions exist at all of the state's public four-year universities except Oregon and Oregon State.

PBS broadcast a documentary on for-profit higher education last week, titled College, Inc. It begins with the slightly ridiculous figure of Michael Clifford, a former cocaine abuser turned born-again Christian who never went to college, yet makes a living padding around the lawn of his oceanside home wearing sandals and loose-fitting print shirts, buying up distressed non-profit colleges and turning them into for-profit money machines.
Improbably, Clifford emerges from the documentary looking okay. When asked what he brings to the deals he brokers, he cites nothing educational. Instead, it’s the “Three M’s: Money, Management, and Marketing.” And hey, there’s nothing wrong with that. A college may have deep traditions and dedicated faculty, but if it’s bankrupt, anonymous, and incompetently run, it won’t do students much good. “Non-profit” colleges that pay their leaders executive salaries and run multi-billion dollar sports franchises have long since ceded the moral high ground when it comes to chasing the bottom line.
The problem with for-profit higher education, as the documentary ably shows, is that people like Clifford are
