Stop Walker’s sleight of hand

My older son did magic shows as a kid. He learned early on that the key to fooling the audience was a steady stream of patter and something to draw their attention so that they wouldn’t notice the trick unfolding before their eyes.

I was reminded of his sleight-of-hand routine when a small group of tea party supporters approached me in Madison on Saturday, the sixth day of protests at the Capitol. They pointed to my sign: “Stop the Attack on Wisconsin Families.”

“Are you one of those freeloaders?” one guy asked. The others started chanting: “Freeloader, Freeloader.” They were filled with rage.

I hastened to assure them that I’d never been an executive at Goldman Sachs or Lehman Brothers or any of those Wall Street firms that crashed the economy and then took TARP money to pay big bonuses. “I never lobbied the government to get rid of regulations on financial institutions,” I said.

Turns out that wasn’t what they were angry about. They were up in arms (not, I was glad to see, literally) about public employees.

My great-uncle Phil was a union organizer in New York between the wars. He later became a small-business owner in Los Angeles, but he never lost touch with his labor roots. Phil owned a nice, modest home in a pleasant, middle class neighborhood in Los Angeles. He passed away last year, having lived past the age of 100, and his home was later sold for an amount that I expect was far out of reach for most union members and small business owners. How did it come to this? Why is it that so many middle class Americans are struggling so much, and those who might be struggling a little less due to unionization have become a target? How does a politician advance his career on the backs of public employees, and find support among workers who’d rather tear down their fellow workers than challenge the economic policies that further enrich an extremely wealthy elite?

Myron Miner: Thank you for agreeing to this interview Congressman. I know you have a busy schedule, so I'll get right to the point. Are you really calling what's going on in Madison a riot?

Jack Kimble: Thank you Myron. What I saw in Wisconsin will forever haunt me. As we walked with our signs I could see the harsh looks that many of the union protesters gave me and I must say, even if they weren't rioting in the streets, they were most certainly rioting in their minds.

MM: That had to be hard for you. What was the worst moment for you.?

JK: On Saturday, we were driven inside by a ferocious blizzard. We went to a local Denny's and the chicken noodle soup I ordered was luke warm and watery. I drank it anyway and I was happy to have it. Once those
