The Wisconsin state Capitol rotunda after dark looks much the same as it does during daylight hours these days. Keep the drums and chants, subtract about half the protestors, add in several tired-eyed toddlers and some sleeping bags, and you’ve got the picture.

“I just took all my stuff and moved in here,” says UW-Madison junior Vali Nashat.

Nestled onto a carpet of blankets in a pillow-cushioned corner of the second floor, Nashat says he hasn’t spent a night away from the Capitol floor since protestors staged the first “sleep-in” Tuesday.

While others in the blanket nook settle in with laptops and textbooks, Nashat and a few friends sit on the edge, talking politics and the protest so far.

“It’s so different from other protests,” muses John Lendved, a UW-Madison senior. “At other rallies people come, they yell their chants, and they leave. Here I’ve seen people helping with clean up. They want to help.”

Not only do the Capitol protestors “want” to help, they’re organized and ready to serve. Thanks to several enterprising groups and a lot of cooperative individuals, the Capitol rotunda now boasts garbage collection, recycling, a community food bank, water supplies, lost and found, an information services station, and more.

The California Teachers Association stands with our colleagues and public employees in Wisconsin whose collective bargaining rights are under attack by Gov. Scott Walker. He is scapegoating working families for state budget problems that they didn’t create. This fight is about far more than cutting salaries and benefits of dedicated public servants. It is a cynical attempt to undermine the rights of teachers and public sector workers to have a say in their profession, and it affects all of us. The ability of teachers to collectively bargain their contracts has resulted not only in improved working conditions, but in improved learning conditions for students as well, in terms of class sizes, safety, and school environment. Buses will also run downtown from the WEA Trust building, 45 Nob Hill Road, Madison (and stopping at the Sheraton Hotel) starting at 7 a.m. and ending at 10 p.m. Buses will be leaving downtown from the MATC downtown campus.

AFSCME is running shuttles from the East Towne location and west side AFCME offices from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.

Here are some guidelines to follow if you are planning public demonstrations or picketing of legislators’ homes:

1. Notify local law enforcement of your plans and make sure you follow whatever reasonable guidelines they request. Better for law enforcement to know what we are doing and why before getting misleading calls from irate neighbors or businesses.
2. Make sure you stay on public property and sidewalks.
3. Do not obstruct driveways, entrances to businesses, or disrupt traffic on streets. This will guarantee police intervention.
4. Have a picketline captain present at all times in charge of maintaining order and all discussions with police or anyone complaining.
5. Be vocal but civil and peaceful. The opposition will use any violence to discredit us and divert attention from our message.
6. If anyone is arrested, contact me on my cell (608)770-6666 and I will arrange for local legal representation.
7. If local law enforcement is imposing unreasonable restrictions designed to prevent the action, politely work your way up the line of authority and if that fails call me.

Saul Alinsky used to say, "you can always count on your enemies." That may turn out to be true in the case of the Wisconsin Governor's attack on the right of state workers to choose a union.

Scott Walker's plan was a blitzkrieg attack that would catch the opposition with its defenses down, like Germany's attack on Russia at the beginning of World War II. His goal was to emasculate the ability of public service employees to negotiate with the state over their salaries and working conditions, and begin the destruction of the unions that represent public sector workers all over America.

Wisconsin was to be the first state to fall. Then other states with radical right Governors - like Ohio and Indiana - would follow suit.

Well, the first casualty of war is the plan. Turns out that - at least for now - Walker's expectation of a lightning-fast victory has been thwarted by a determined Democratic Senate caucus that left the state and denied the Senate a quorum. DAYTON — On the heels of demonstrations in Columbus and Wisconsin that have drawn thousands of union supporters, Dayton-area labor leaders are planning a regional rally of police, firefighters and teachers to oppose plans to cut the collective bargaining rights of public employees.

Union activists plan to rally outside the Dayton Convention Center downtown at 9:15 a.m. Monday, while state Sen. Peggy Lehner, R-Kettering, hosts a town hall meeting inside.

“Stripping our collective bargaining rights strips our voices,” said David Romick, president of the 1,200-member Dayton Education Association.

The union rights of public employees have become hot-button issues in several states, including Ohio, as Republican governors and legislatures are seeking to control costs by eliminating or reducing workers’ ability to bargain collectively,
