Yale, Simmons get grants to study food programs

NEW HAVEN, Conn.—Yale University and Boston's Simmons College are being awarded federal grants to research government-funded food and nutrition assistance programs.

Those programs include the former food stamp program now known as SNAP -- the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program -- and the related program WIC, which stands for Women, Infants and Children.

Yale is receiving $265,000 from the U.S. Agriculture Department to study

10.2.10 - Sanford Pinsker - According to the Chronicle of Higher Education (July 4, 2010), the U.S. Department of Education will soon publish a report documenting the steep decline among college professors with tenure or with tenure-line appointments. In l975, 57% of all college teachers fell into these categories; as of 2007, the number was 31%. The news is depressing but not particularly surprising because the assault against tenure has been going on for some time.

Washington (CNN) -- Five weeks after Tea Party enthusiasts rallied in Washington and one month before mid-term elections, a coalition of liberal groups will have their turn on the streets of the U.S. capital.

The "One Nation Working Together" together rally kicks off Saturday at the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall.

The alliance of progressive and liberal groups say they've joined together to demand more economic opportunities and better education.

Organizers claim a wide range of supporters, some of whom are already associated with liberal causes -- like union workers, environmentalists, gay activists and student leaders. But "One Nation" also claims backing from less obvious quarters -- like senior citizens, veterans and faith leaders.

West Liberty University will host Johns Hopkins University sociologist Joyce Epstein as this semester's Hughes Lecturer.

Epstein's lecture, "A Base on Which to Build: Advances in Theory, Research and Practical Programs of School, Family and Community Partnerships," will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the Boyle Conference Center on WLU's main campus.

Epstein has devoted her career to the promotion of parent involvement in students' education. She is director of the Center on School, Family and Community Partnerships and the National Network of Partnership Schools. In 1995, Epstein established NNPS, which continues to guide schools, districts and state leaders to develop research-based programs of family and community involvement.

Epstein has more than 100 publications on family and community involvement including "School, Family and Community Partnerships: Your Handbook for Action" and a college textbook for future teachers and administrators titled "School, Family and Community Partnerships: Preparing Educators and Improving Schools."

Milwaukee Public Schools and the union representing 5,600 MPS teachers have reached a tentative agreement on a new four-year contract expected to save up to $50 million over the next two years.

The previous contract between MPS and the Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association expired more than a year ago. The new contract covers the period from July 1, 2009, through June 30, 2013, and contains no pay increase for the first year.

In the second year, teachers receive a 3 percent increase in a lump sum, and years three and four have pay increases of 2.5 percent and 3 percent, respectively.

Changes to the health care plans include employee premium contributions. The changes are expected to save the district an estimated $45 million to $50 million over the next two years. The savings will support more funding to classrooms and address the district’s structural

A federal investigation has determined that Boston schools violated the civil rights of thousands of students who speak limited English by failing to provide specialized instruction, leading to a settlement agreement that calls for the school district to overhaul programs and bolster teacher training, officials announced yesterday.

Li ly Eskeslon does a nice job of refocusing the narrative against the Fox News person. What's interesting to me is the number of absolute bullshit, totally wrong things the infotainer repeats--- teachers are locked into their jobs with tenure; they can't be fired; everyone knows who the good and bad teachers in every school. She sounds like Oprah! Or the President!

Dozens of Hiram Johnson students staged a walkout Friday morning to protest myriad issues they say stem from a new administration.

Students say new Principal Felisberto Cedros and his administrative staff were not listening to their concerns about school safety, scheduling issues and cafeteria changes.

Cedros said he met with the estimated 60 to 100 students in a school auditorium after they walked out of second period and stood in a parking lot. He said there were a few genuine concerns, but he labeled others "silly" and based on rumors.
