By now much of the world has seen video and photos of Lt. John Pike of the UC Davis police department as he discharged a canister of burning chemicals into the faces of students seated in the center of the university quad. Most viewers are outraged, and justifiably so. Much of the outrage has been directed at John Pike. He deserves it. But we should remind ourselves that Friday’s police violence was only an aberration because it happened on a university campus not easily assimilable to the stereotype of “Berkeley radicals” and to students who are perceived or portrayed as mostly white and as resisting passively. Whiteness is brought up here, not to chastise those who only now denounce police violence that has been routinely applied to non-white communities and individuals—this itself is a misperception of Friday’s events: a majority of those arrested were not white—but to invite readers, new and old, to extend the critique of police violence beyond the walls of the university to the communities whose life it damages every single day.

Friday’s punitive violence, as terrible as it was, is not an example of bad policing. It is an example of policing.

At Occupy Davis, relations with the democratically elected city council and local police forces have been genial and productive. The authorities have worked continuously to harmonize the occupation’s presence with the park and surrounding businesses and ensure that all aspects of the encampment remain non-violent. Those in charge of using force are aware that they are democratically elected officials that are directly accountable to the people.

Occupy UC Davis, a mere three blocks away, is under the jurisdiction of an undemocratic, appointed regime of force over which its subjects have no meaningful democratic control. The authorities there attacked non-violent protesters with indifference, and, in some cases, a clear display of sadistic pleasure.

There could be no better illustration of the differences between a democratic, accountable public safety effort and a fascist, totalitarian, unaccountable police state. The students of UC Davis have no meaningful voice, and that is

For three hours UC Davis students surrounded the Chancellor’s office. This followed 24 hours of outrage as the video of police pepper spraying students, arms locked in non-violent protest, went viral.

Finally Chancellor Katehi did the equivalence of a perp walk. Students lined both sides of a walkway and watched in absolute silence as the Chancellor walked to her car.

It is a stunning and powerful moment.

The embattled UC Davis chancellor, Linda P.B. Katehi, had to stop a news conference prematurely Saturday night after protesters angry that police had used pepper spray on Occupy demonstrators disrupted the event.

Hundreds of students surrounded the building where Katehi was speaking, and police were called in.

A video of a Friday incident posted on the Internet showed a police officer dousing the protesters with a canister of pepper spray as they sat huddled on the ground. The police had been attempting to clear the university's Quad of tents and campers.

Faculty and students reacted with outrage. Nathan Brown, an assistant professor of English, said in an interview that the episode was the latest example of "the systematic use by UC chancellors of police brutality" to suppress protests.

IT IS something that both sides finally agree on: The education system in New Jersey needs to be reformed. How the sides propose to go about doing that is another matter indeed.

Last week, at its annual meeting, the New Jersey Education Association announced its broad education reform agenda. But because of the acrimonious relationship between Governor Christie and the state teachers union, because the NJEA is in the midst of a domestic dispute with many Democratic legislators who supported the governor on state employee pension and benefit reform, and because the agenda comes without a recommendation of funding source, most view the NJEA agenda as dead in the water.

Harding High's disruptions were caused by a small number of students and are under control now, according to several speakers at a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools news conference Thursday.

"I feel comfortable and safe here," said 11th-grader Roberto Martinez, an International Baccalaureate magnet student at Harding for three years.

A day that had been the subject of rumors about possible violence at the school ended without incident, as interim Superintendent Hugh Hattabaugh, Harding Principal Alicisa Johnson, a teacher and three students said they're ready for the westside school to get out of the spotlight and back to business.

United Opt Out National has declared January 7th as National Opt Out Day. On this day we are encouraging Occupy movements everywhere to endorse this action and encourage parents, students and community members to write letters/postcards to their school districts stating how they will OPT OUT. We have created apostcard that allows for multiple ways to opt out and it can be purchased in bulk to share at Occupy movements on this date – January 7th. Join us! Of course, the slam dunk is opting out of the state test as this will shut down
