    Mr. Duncan,

    I read your Teacher Appreciation Week letter to teachers, and had at first decided not to respond. Upon further thought, I realized I do have a few things to say.

    I’ll begin with a small sample of relevant adjectives just to get them out of the way: condescending, arrogant, insulting, misleading, patronizing, egotistic, supercilious, haughty, insolent, peremptory, cavalier, imperious, conceited,
    contemptuous, pompous, audacious, brazen, insincere, superficial, contrived, garish, hollow, pedantic, shallow, swindling, boorish, predictable, duplicitous, pitchy, obtuse, banal, scheming, hackneyed, and quotidian. Again,

    Since a Diane Ravitch tweet about our our 2007 paper, “Frozen Assets: Rethinking Teacher Contracts Could Save Billions for School Reform,” is going viral on a holiday weekend, I want to make sure nobody enjoying a few days off misses out.

    That's the question NYC teachers have to ask themselves, and surprisingly, there's another worthwhile column in the NY Post which ponders the question. I don't know how many times I've spoken to teachers who've told me they were judged by their passing ratios. Is it the fault of crazy supervisors? Perhaps, but they're under the same ridiculous pressures we are--if you don't perform, they close your school, ship in better students, and send the troubled ones to the next school on the hit list.

    So you try to get kids with the program. You call, you beg, you send them to get help? If that doesn't work,

    [The following is a transcript of Myron Miner's address to the Global Summit on Education and Technology in Paris on May 28, 2011]

    Thank you as well for the invitation to speak today.

    We are living through a time when many of our leading economies are not performing as they should. It is easy to blame bankers, or corporations putting the bottom line before people, but in reality this economic slowdown is the fault of our teachers.

    To fix this mess, we must replace the teacher, or at least the teacher as it is now designed. The time of smarter and smarter machines is coming and we are falling behind on our ability to keep up with the demands of this new technology. We must develop a new education program that will met our needs in the future and those of our robot overlords.

    That digital future - and its connection with education - is my topic this afternoon.

    Tony Danza Has a New Teaching Job, Cries 'a Lot' in Front of His StudentsIt’s a holiday weekend, and I have a little more time on my hands than usual. I wanted to get away, but that didn’t quite work out. So, I decided to spend a little more time on the computer than I normally do, and I came across this article about Tony Danza, teacher. Now I use the word “teacher” lightly, very, very, lightly. This article was posted in September 2010, but I think it’s relevant to what people think of teachers.

    The network decided to do a reality series called, “Teach”. They think and they think, and someone says, “I know who we could get!?” “Tony Danza!” Seriously? Not one of the Teacher of the Year candidates? They didn’t think of me? Or any of the millions of hard-working, talented, teachers that work diligently every day of their lives?

    ”Even though Tony describes teaching as his “dream job,” he only did it for the year that he was paid to be on A&E — which … well, you can draw your own conclusions here.” Hmmm… What conclusion can we draw? What a farce! He “taught” so that he could get paid to be on television. Is this a person you would want teaching your kids for a year? What a waste of a school year! I would love to know how he was held
