      Redwood Heights Elementary School in Oakland is teaching kids this week that boys and girls don’t all fit into neat gender norms, and that they shouldn’t laugh at or tease someone if they do (or wear) something different or unusual.

      When I was a little girl, my mother looked me straight in the eye and said “Jennifer, you’re going to school until you have gray hair!” I remember thinking “Wow. I am going to be old—at least 40 years old by the time I completed school.

      This decree from my mother was one early indicator that mom deeply valued education. However, mom didn’t just say she valued education, she showed me. Every night, before she started her 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift at the hospital, she would check my homework for neatness and completion and perform a “surprise inspection” of my book bag. If I didn’t finish a math problem, that problem would greet me at breakfast.

      Adam Ozemik has two thoughtful pieces up (here and here) on the economics of unions and the difficulty organized labor faces in a global, dynamic economy. He makes some very strong points. I would argue that organized labor since Taft-Hartley has largely been the creature of state-capitalism, and if we moved toward something more closely resembling free-market unionism not only would unions be more effective, they would be better suited to a dynamic, global economy.

      Recently, Kirsten Olson posted about the influence of the Gates Foundation in getting messages of education reform spread through paid bloggers and investing around $500,000 in spreading these messages. Please read her very important post, We’re Not Getting Paid. Kirsten also points out that at the Cooperative Catalyst we aren’t getting paid for our voices in the education transformation debate. We blog about education transformation because we are passionate about children worldwide become lifelong learners. We have a vision of schools supporting curiosity, creativity, play, and collaboration. However, our messages of education transformation have not spread as much as those sponsored by The Gates Foundation, the media, and politicians.

      The reality is that the media and politicians have a firm grounding in marketing and have the money and connections to spread their ideas. They know how to persuade their audiences into supporting their policies.       So says Chancellor Walcott, testifying in Albanyregarding a(nother) new teacher evaluation system. It's hard to argue with some of what the Chancellor proposes. It probably doesn't help anyone for 3020-a hearings to drag on for months, and we can all agree that convicted sex criminals should be removed immediately from classrooms. These are no-brainers.

      But his statement referenced in the title troubles me. The rights of adults should never trump the rights of children? Be careful with absolutes, Chancellor. For while every child certainly does have the right to a quality free and public education, the adults educating that child ought to

      Last week on Twitter I got caught in the cross-fire of someone “twitter spewing” on Diane Ravitch. I won’t dignify the “spewer” by naming them here as they need more attention like Lady GaGa needs more publicity. But, the encounter was interesting for one point…the person’s insistence that Dr. Ravitch had “no educational philosophy”. Dr. Ravitch has been accused of not having a fully-formed education policy, (a charge I think is irrelevant) but that is much different than saying she has no education philosophy.

      It was telling however, and says something about the mindset of reform-y types. They do not have an education
