As the Governor's girth grows at a pace that is only exceeded by that of his ego, and as he applies his ham-handed surgical procedure for economic banding to New Jersey schools, the Courts have finally stepped in to challenge Christie's attempted extermination of public education through starvation. New Jersey Abbot Districts, those with the poorest children in the state, have been particularly hard hit for a reason.

When towns like Edison with large numbers of poor children have their State education funding cut by 55 percent in one year (see below), that puts them on the fast track to privatization via segregated corporate charter schools. No longer are the oligarchs and the bottom feeding hedge funders working the angles of Wall Street content to wait any longer for AYP to work its relentless formula toward privatization of urban America. Diane Ravitch, education historian and author

Experience: Under Republican President George H.W. Bush, Diane Ravitch served as assistant secretary of education in the early 1990s. From 1997 to 2004, she was a member of the board that oversaw the National Assessment of Educational Progress, which administers the same standardized assessment to samples of students across the nation.

She is currently a New York University education professor and Brookings Institution senior fellow. With the recent publication of her book, The Death and Life of the Great American School System, she’s now best known for

I will answer, at greater length, as the sun rises. But for now:
1. I answer with injured pride. And offense. My answer is the same, if you think I am a good teacher, a bad teacher, or a decent, reasonable teacher. What do you mean, a teacher like me? And let me add this – when you, other teachers, hear that question, you should take offense, too.
2. Do you want me to convince someone to support the union? Or are you just asking why I support it? Because if you are just asking why, it is easy. Supporting your union is the right thing to do. Period. I don’t really think about it. Ever. I never debated whether or not I should support my union. I was raised that way.
3. My union has a lot of problems. The leadership screws up in big and little ways. But it is my damned union, and don’t think for half a moment that it gets anything less than my full support. I want to improve what could be

March 22 is coming to a close in New York. We had a color day in schools – red for Wisconsin. I’ve got some nice pics, sending them in. But we had a blog action day, too. A hundred bloggers, and who knows how many facebookers answered the prompt: Why do teachers like me support unions?
A few days ago Steve Lazar, Chapter Leader at another small Bronx school, writes to Jose Vilson, Ken Bernstein, and me, complaining that he’s just been asked for the umpteenth time why a teacher like him (don’t know what “like him” means, but I’m guessing some combo of young, white, smart, energetic, well-educated, well-mannered) would support the UFT, and worse, be a chapter leader. Steve thinks we should do a blog action day to coincide with the wear red for Wisconsin (and the other states) day, March 22 (that’s now today). And we say yes.
We batted around a few ideas for a name. We thought about who should sign the appeal. Just Steve? Just us? A few more? Wide open? We shot for a dozen. And we broke up the work. For a bit there, I felt odd man out. My

Here's a piece by Linda Darling-Hammond. She did not prove to be the darling of the "reform" crowd, which prevailed upon our eager-to-compromise President to hire Arne Duncan, whose Rennaissance 2010, an abysmal failure, needed to be replicated for the entire US of A. There's a very good reason Darling Hammond is not popular in "reform" circles.

Pandora is not a malicious bird but some things just stick in her craw. Denver Public Schools Board of Education President Nate Easley, and his actions (or failure to act) genuinely on behalf of the schools and his constituents is one such thing. Hence, she hereby goes on record as favoring the movement to recall him, naming her top reasons here. She has decided to refrain from listing them all, in the interest of brevity and avoiding (most) pettiness. (Bird images forthcoming.)

Reason 1. Conflict of interest, whether it be real or perceived. He works for the Denver Scholarship Foundation which is overseen by Superintendent Tom Boasberg. Now, maybe it’s true, as he claims, that there is no real conflict of interest. However, there is that funny little habit he has of casting 100% of his votes with District proposals.
