Daily Kos: of earthquakes, hurricanes, and teaching:

of earthquakes, hurricanes, and teaching

It has been an interesting first week of school. On Tuesday near the end of the day we had our earthquake, which led to our schools being closed the following day in order to inspect all for damage (one school is remaining closed). Over the weekend we had Irene, with flooding and widespread electrical outages. All our schools were closed yesterday, and 18 schools remain closed today, although where I teach is open. There are, between the two main power companies, over 35,000 customers still without power, although most of the homes in our immediate attendance area have had power restored - but some those who come to us from out of our attendance area - which is about 1/3 of our students - still lack power.

It is not just a day off when school closes like this. It requires replanning, not just simply sliding the schedule forward one or more days. Let me explain.
