Evidence-Driven versus Evidence-Influenced Education Policy

Conservative "reformer" Rick Hess demonstrated the best short-term tactic for dealing with amateurs who feel free to editorialize about public schools without having a clue about what they are pontificating about.  Yes, the New York Times' Tom Friedman's "man crush" on Arne Duncan is illustrative of way Op Ed writers feel free to pass on educational policy analyses that are the equivalent of cocktail party talk. On the other hand, we must do more than ridicule journalists who are not on the education beat.  To help them understand school improvement issues, we must devise a fair definition of the two schools of thought in our educational debate.

The contemporary data-driven school "reform" movement emerged during the Lee Atwater/Dick Morris

Let’s clear one thing up. “Right to work” laws, which permit employees working at a unionized workplace to refuse to join the union or to pay the union the cost of representing the worker, are designed to weaken the economic and political power of organized labor and, by extension, wage workers. Full stop. They allow workers to “free ride” all the benefits of a collective-bargaining agreement (increased wages, benefits, rights to adjudicate a dispute with a supervisor, safety and health requirement beyond those mandated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, etc.) negotiated by the union without paying any of the union dues their fellow employees pay.
The vaunted libertarian argument in support of right to work would be far more convincing if libertarians supported the rights of employees to reject at their discretion the countless rules and obligations that employers mandate as a condition of employment. The argument seems to be that employees are free either to quit a job or not take it in the first place if they find various company requirements—e.g., what time they are to come to work—onerous or unpleasant. Libertarians do not argue, however, that workers have the right to retain their employment yet arrive at work at noon if their employer wishes

Hard to Dispel Myths

The latest, but “well-established” myth is that more time spent in school equals better test scores.  The Center for Public Education checks the aim out and discovers: “The data clearly shows that most U.S. schools require at least as much or more instructional time as other countries, even high-performing countries like Finland, Japan, and Korea…..  the U.S. does not require schools to provide less instructional time than other countries.”  In fact, in Finland the hours spent in school is considerably less.  And in China I wouldn’t believe a word they

The Deplorable State of Adjunct Faculty Compensation

It is not just K-12 public school teachers who are getting squeezed by budget cuts, stagnant pay, declining working conditions and attacks on tenure. Today, nearly 70% of all college and university faculty are non-tenured, part-time adjunct faculty (according to a recent piece in Truth Out), with no job security and generally lower pay and fewer benefits than their tenured colleagues.

Many of these professors find themselves having to accept teaching positions at multiple

My Story

My name is Lundy Khoy and I came with my parents, Sinath Khoy and Rasy Monh, to the United States on November 12, 1981. I was one year old. My entire family migrated to the United States after escaping the awful Pol Pot genocide in which over 2 million Cambodians were murdered. They found shelter at a refugee camp in Thailand where my mother gave birth to me on November 10, 1980. I grew up in California and went to elementary, middle, and high school there. In the middle of high school my family relocated to Virginia in order to be closer to the rest of our relatives.

Google Offers $99 Chromebooks For Education

Google announced today that Chromebooks for education will be available for $99 through December 21st (see the Reuters article, Google makes MIT prof’s dream of $100 laptops for students a reality).
I don’t know how realistic it is for teachers to arrange permissions through their district’s bureaucratic maze to make these kinds of purchases within two weeks, especially with the exclusive arrangements that many have with companies for their technology purchases, but it does demonstrate that perhaps costs for this kind of equipment can reach manageable levels eventually.
Of course, another potential problem is their compatibility, or lack of compatibility, with the upcoming technology requirements of the next generation of standardized testing.

Jersey Jazzman: The Most Obvious Thing In The World:

The Most Obvious Thing In The World

Camden is the poorest city in America and probably the most violent. The child poverty rate is 57%. Median income is $21,191. The murder rate is twenty times higher than the national average.

Golly, do you think maybe this could affect student learning?
Camden’s school district was the outlier during three presentations to the state board of education last week.
Across New Jersey, high school graduation rates improved by 3 percent in a year.
But in Camden, the rate plummeted by 7 percent to 49.3, down from 56.9 percent last year. Camden now has the second lowest graduation rate in the state.
Only Trenton, at 48.44 percent, is lower.
Statewide, NJ ASK scores remained constant this year. HSPA scores continued to rise. But several of Camden’s schools continued to struggle with scores.
Overall, charter schools throughout the state outpaced traditional public schools by 30 percent in reading and 40 percent in math. And in Newark, charter schools did even

The Education Advocates' Battle Cry: "Let's Push the Kids Off the Fiscal Cliff!" :: Frederick M. Hess: The Education Advocates' Battle Cry: "Let's Push the Kids Off the Fiscal Cliff!" *by Frederick M. Hess • Dec 10, 2012 at 6:22 am * Look, let's keep this simple. As a nation, we're spending vast sums we don't have. In every year of President Obama's first term, we borrowed more than a $1 trillion. Today, the federal debt stands at $16.4 trillion (we spend $220 billion a year just paying interest on the debt.) If we extend the Bush tax cuts, once again prolong unfunded "patches"... more »

Can an SB 736 Compromise Be Found in Los Angeles? | Scathing Purple Musings: Can an SB 736 Compromise Be Found in Los Angeles? by Bob Sikes From the *Los Angeles Times*: The recent groundbreaking agreement over evaluations for educators in the Los Angeles school district is a major victory for the teachers union because it limits the use of a controversial — but increasingly widespread — measurement of teacher effectiveness. The tentative pact puts the nation’s second-largest school system at odds with a national trend to gauge the effect of teachers on student achievement by us...more »

What went wrong with this quiz? « JD2718: What went wrong with this quiz? by jd2718 I have been doing math with kids for a while. Sixteen years paid. And more before that. Why did this system of linear equations take kids more than triple the time I anticipated? Writing good questions for the classroom, designing homework, making tests and quizzes. And when I offer a question, I expect a response. Sometimes I set up a mistake, prepared to talk about it. Sometimes I introduce a small twist, to take something that is easy for the kids, and make it challenging. I chose problems to... more »

If to be smarter means that ... more »

Unions and Industry Responsibility « Deborah Meier on Education: Unions and Industry Responsibility by debmeier A thought. Why do we assume that teacher’s unions have a responsibility for the state of eduction? As one who is a believer in unions as a force for social good that seems like an odd question. Of course they have a responsibility! On the other hand do we hold the policemen’s union responsible for the state of crime in America? Or the mineworkers union for the problems caused by coal? Surely their voice on these matters has special interest given the work their memb... more »
