Transcript of Campbell Brown’s Interview with Stephen Colbert

August 3, 2014
On August 1, 2014, blogger Jersey Jazzman published an insightful post regarding former CNN news anchor Campbell Brown’s appearance on the Colbert Report on July 31, 2014, as she discussed her intention to abolish teacher job protections “for the children” first in new York and then in other states nationwide.
I know, I know.
On August 2, 2014, education historian Diane Ravitch posted Jersey Jazzman’s piece on Brown’s Colbert Report appearance. At the time, even though I hadresearched Brown’s background, I had not viewed her 8-minute interview. However, I found many of the comments on Ravitch’s posting to include some insightful points.
I decided I would watch the interview.
Then, I decided others might find it useful if I transcribed the Colbert-Brown exchange.
So I did.
Here it is:
And here is the link to the video interview.
Allow me to suggest reading the transcript then following with both Jersey Jazzman’s 08-01-14 post and the comments section on Ravitch’s 08-02-14 posting. (Both links are above.)
If you will do so, you will understand why there really is nothing more for me to add.

Chicago Teachers’ New Political Awakening | Living in Dialogue:

shadow

By Michelle Gunderson.
What would our city look like if it were run by Chicago teachers alongside other labor and community groups? This was the thought that kept running through my head as we gathered to support the launch of the newUnited Working Families political organization in Chicago.
I have strong hope that Chicago would look much different than it does now. It has to.
Mayor Emanuel states over and over again that Chicago is a world class city. Yet this is a place where we do not have resources for our schools to educate our children, where we do not have wages and jobs so we can afford our own city, and where we do not have affordable, safe housing for our families.
Mayor Emanuel, we are far from being a world class city.
The mission of the United Working Families (UWF) states that we will “organize families, strengthen their voices on issues of racial, social and economic justice, and challenge the corporate dominance of a two-party system by lifting up our issues and our champions.”
What does this mean? We will no longer blindly open up our checkbooks to the Democratic Party.
That was the old way of doing business.
According to Matt Luskin, a Chicago Teachers Union organizer, “We are looking for immediate campaigns that address our struggle.” UWF was not formed to take over the roles and leadership of groups that are already doing social justice work in Chicago. Its goal is to identify and back political power that will support our work.
“Imagine a campaign of face to face organizing in as many wards as possible”, says Bob Simpson in his DailyChicago Teachers’ New Political Awakening | Living in Dialogue:

Celebrated Trial Lawyer to Head Group Challenging Teacher Tenure

David Boies, the star trial lawyer who helped lead the legal charge that overturned California’s same-sex marriage ban, is becoming chairman of thePartnership for Educational Justice, a group that former CNN anchor Campbell Brown founded in part to pursue lawsuits challenging teacher tenure.
Mr. Boies, the son of two public schoolteachers, is a lifelong liberal who represented Al Gore in Bush v. Gore and prosecuted Microsoft in the Clinton Administration’s antitrust suit. In aligning himself with a cause that is bitterly opposed by teachers’ unions, he is emblematic of an increasingly fractured relationship between the Democrats and the teachers’ unions.
As chairman of the new group, Mr. Boies, 73, will join Ms. Brown as the public face of a legal strategy in which the group organizes parents and students to bring lawsuits against states with strong tenure and seniority protections.
In a suit filed in New York last month, plaintiffs supported by Ms. Brown’s group argued that tenure laws make it too difficult to fire ineffective teachers and force principals to make personnel decisions based on seniority rather than performance. The suit argues that such laws disproportionately harm low-income and minority students.
A California judge recently ruled in a similar case that teacher tenure laws violate students’ civil rights under the state’s constitution. The group that brought that case, known as Vergara v. California, said it would be pursuing similar litigation elsewhere as well. In a sign of the legal firepower attracted to the cause, Theodore B. Olson, Mr. Boies’ partner in the California same-sex marriage case, has been advising the Vergara plaintiffs.
In an interview in his firm’s offices in Manhattan, Mr. Boies said he viewed the cause of tenure overhaul as “pro-teacher.”
“I think teaching is one of the most important professions that we have in this country,” he said. But, he added, “there can be a tension” between union efforts to protect workers and “what society needs to do, which is to make sure that the social function — in this case teaching — is being fulfilled.” Mr.Celebrated Trial Lawyer to Head Group Challenging Teacher Tenure - NYTimes.com:

Six Years Under the Masthead: Farewell to Ed Week

This post marks my last appearance at Education Week, after six eventful years. The summer of 2008 was the beginning of Living in Dialogue, launched with the help of John Norton. In that first year, I wrote about the presidential candidates, including Barack Obama, and once President Obama was elected, suggested he select either Linda Darling Hammond or Pedro Noguera to serve as Secretary of Education.
In the summer of 2009, I wrote about the process underway to write Common Core standards, in a post called "The Secret 60 Prepare to Write Standards for Fifty Million."   That fall, after seeing the launch of the misguided Race to the Top contest for billions, I wrote an open letter to President Obama, and invited others to do the same. We wrote of the continuation of the worst aspects of No Child Left Behind, the overemphasis on test scores and school closures. I used Living in Dialogue as a place to collect letters, and started a Facebook group as well, to discuss the issues, and galvanize action. Living in Dialogue ran dozens of letters, and a collection of more than a hundred was sent to the president and his Secretary of Education. In the spring of 2010, arepresentative group had the chance for a phone call with Secretary Duncan. We worked hard to develop the points we wanted to make, but when the call came, we were disappointed. We did not feel heard, and our concerns were never seriously addressed by the administration.
In 2011, frustrated by this direction, Living in Dialogue helped build for the Save Our Schools March in Washington, DC. I was involved in organizing the march, and ran interviews with activists and leaders like John KuhnAlfie Kohn, and Pedro Noguera. The protest was attended by more than 5000 activists, and was the largest such demonstration of the decade.
In February of 2012, I pointed out that President Obama had attacked his own policies in remarks at a town hall, where he said we "test too much," and perhaps should only test every Six Years Under the Masthead: Farewell to Ed Week - Living in Dialogue - Education Week Teacher:

which I delivered yesterday in Lisner Auditorium at George Washington University.
I was invited to speak on behalf of the Educators of Distinction, those educators who had been selected by the student members of the organization.
This was the third time I have been asked to fulfill this role.
I have lost track of how many times students have so selected me - I do remember one year two of my students did.
Anyhow, make of my words what you will.
They are below the fold.

As I look out at those before me, I hesitate as a teacher to speak on behalf of the student members of the National Society of High School Scholars.  After all, I am a teacher, not a student.
And yet I know the importance of the Society to students because of my students who have become members, whether I have nominated them or other teachers have.
In one sense I would like all of my students to be eligible for the National Society of High School Scholars.  I am saddened that I am not able to make that happen.
I am delighted to suggest to students that they might want to participate in the society.  I have seen the benefits they receive.
I think especially of one of my former students, Gabrielle Robinson, who was a major scholarship winner, and how much her participation meant to her.
Students, your presence here, and that of your parents, demonstrates you recognize the value of your participation.
I speak to you today on behalf of the Educators of Distinction.  We hold that role because one of you or one of your compatriots in the Society has picked each of us as a “teacher, counselor, or administrator who has made a positive impact on their lives during their high school career.”  To date there are only about 40,000 Educators of Distinction out of more than 3 million educators.
As a teacher there are many ways to evaluate my work.  Some propose to do it by the test My remarks to the National Society of High School Scholars:

Analysis: Dispute over Common Core gets personal

Updated 2:03 pm, Sunday, August 3, 2014

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The clash over whether Louisiana's public schools should teach to the Common Core education standards has devolved into a bitter public feud that will have one-time political friends sitting on opposite sides of courtrooms.
Dueling lawsuits have been filed. An ethics complaint is in the works. Contracts are being audited. Accusations have been lodged of illegal behavior, ethical impropriety and political pandering.
And while the attacks grow more personal, major questions about the educational path of the state's public schools remain unanswered with students returning to classrooms in the next two weeks.
The upheaval started in June, when Gov. Bobby Jindal issued executive orders seeking to undermine use of Common Core and its associated testing.
The Common Core standards are grade-by-grade benchmarks of what students should learn in English and math. They have been adopted by more than 40 states and were once championed by Louisiana's Republican governor.
Supporters of the standards praise them as a better method for preparing students for college and careers after high school. Critics say the standards are untested, raise privacy concerns about data-sharing and damage state autonomy.
Jindal now opposes Common Core as a federal intrusion into local education, echoing the concerns raised by tea party groups around the nation.
But while the governor changed his mind on the standards, a majority of members of theBoard of Elementary and Secondary Education, or BESE, still support Common Core, along with Jindal's hand-picked state education superintendent, John White.
State lawmakers also refused to jettison Louisiana's use of the standards earlier this year.
When Jindal suspended the testing contracts, he said the education department didn't follow state procurement law and needed to seek competitive bids for the work. But he also said the move would help to get "Louisiana out of the Common Core."
White and BESE President Chas Roemer said the governor overstepped his legal authority.
Roemer accused Jindal of trying to govern by executive fiat and of changing his position on Analysis: Dispute over Common Core gets personal - SFGate:

Another Reason Why Teachers Need Tenure Part 1(b)

Libel; a published false statement that is damaging to a person's reputation; a written defamation.

I have been wanting to write for a few days about the article in the NY Post last week about a Queens middle school teacher and his relationship with a 14 year old student.

Now mind you, in no way is it being brought into question in this post whether or not he is guilty or innocent, or a little guilty or a little innocent, or condoning the actions of the teacher.

Let's cut to the chase. This teacher was dumb, stupid, and a schmuck for texting a student, especially with anything non-school related and so late at night.

Giving the student expensive gifts and was stupid and wrong.

Letting the student drive his car was stupid and wrong.

Texting "I love you," no matter how innocuous was stupid and wrong.

Getting facts wrong and making a libelous comment is stupid and wrong.

When this story came out of course Mona Davids was among the first to spew off an opinion. The sad part is not only did Mona play loose and fast with the facts it appeared that she libeled this teacher.

In the Post article it mentioned that the student accused the teacher of;
...letting him watch pornography in his apartment, according to a report by Richard Condon, the special commissioner of investigation for city schools
What Mona fails to realize is that the above is known as an "accusation." To help Mona understand what an "accusation" is, and for her to reference in the future, The Crack Team has decided to give her a place to reference;
a charge or claim that someone has done something illegal or wrong.
But that is not all. As one can see in the above tweet, Mona claimed (Shall we help Mona with the http://www.southbronxschool.com:
