Daily Kos: King Cotton’s Long Shadow

Daily Kos: King Cotton’s Long Shadow:

King Cotton’s Long Shadow

is the title of this piece in the Opiniator section of the New York Times website.  It was written by Walter Johnson, a professor of history and African and African-American Studies at Harvard.  It is not long, and definitely worth the read.
A couple of things caught my eye. He posits that the normal viewpoint that the Civil War represented the victory of capitalism over slavery is incorrect:
In actual fact, however, in the years before the Civil War, there was no capitalism without slavery. The two were, in many ways, one and the same.
 He reminds us that
Eighty-five percent of the cotton Southern slaves picked was shipped to Britain. The mills that have come to symbolize the Industrial Revolution and the slave-tilled fields of the South were mutually dependent. Every year, British merchant banks advanced millions of pounds to American planters

School Tech Connect: This Isn't Goodbye-Goodbye...:

This Isn't Goodbye-Goodbye...

...but it's goodbye for now.

And so we have come to the end of School TechConnect. It's been a hell of a ride.

I'm taking a few months off.

I'll still be active on Twitter because as you know, I have to chime in on every little thing. And if I have something more extensive to say, I have a space ready for that. And I fully intend to be out on the streets with my cameras, so you ain't heard the last from Ernest T. Bass, as a famous hillbilly once said.

But the daily blogging is over for a while.

I'd like to thank all of my readers. You three have been a terrific audience. And I'd like to thank the people who've linked to me--- you have excellent taste, all of you.

But seriously, thank you.

According to my vaguely sketched plan, I'll be back in the saddle in August, in a new space, with my famously caustic wit intact. In other words, the babbling will continue in the fall.

See you on the streets. Adios!

The Republicans in the state legislature pulled a fast one on the Democrats. They pretended to negotiate in good faith, but then passed a bill that the Democrats never saw.
The Republicans also pulled a fast one on the citizens of Alabama by passing the so-called "Alabama Accountability Act" that will send taxpayers' dollars to religious schools and for- profit entrepreneurs. Worse, they agreed to take money away from the state's struggling public schools, which will undermine public education for all.
Don't let them fool you. What they did is not conservative. Conservatives don't go around blowing up traditional institutions. Conservatives don't destroy public schools to make some Wall Street investors richer. Conservatives don't create turmoil and dissension in their hometowns.
The supporters of the legislation make grandiose claims about how vouchers and competition will have a dramatic effect on student achievement and save children from "failing schools." But none of it is true. Milwaukee has had vouchers and charters since 1990. When the voucher program started, its champions made the same claims. Twenty-two years later, we know that none of those claims came true. On the

There are two huge pieces of news on the book front.   First, Profiles in Courageousness will be coming out in paperback form and secondly, it's been proofread and copy edited.  The new version will be appearing in the eBook stores soon and when that happens, I will make sure that anybody who bought the first version will be able to get the proofread copy free of charge.

In addition, I am as always on a crusade to save Easter from the Communists, Atheists, and Unitarians who wish to destroy it.  To that end, I am encouraging wholesome family values by giving away my eBook free of charge.  Simply go eBookit.com  and enter the coupon code "Easter".  You can even get the book in PDF format if you don't have an E-Reader. This free book give away will only last until tomorrow night at 8PM Eastern time.

To all my Christian friends, have a joyous and Happy Easter.  To my non-believer friends, no hard feelings about the whole crucifixion thing.

Thinking About Schools: Atlanta: We're All A Little Responsible In 1999, many of my colleagues and I began writing about the perils of excessive standardized testing. If only we’d been outraged when we learned the “Texas Miracle” upon which NCLB was modeled was fraudulent. In 2003 small groups of Massachusetts parents and students boycott... more »
