Bill reforming process of firing teachers resurfaces with amendments | EdSource Today:

AB 375 sponsor, Assemblywoman Joan Buchanan
A highly contested bill that potentially would make it quicker and less costly to dismiss teachers has risen from legislative purgatory with significant changes that could lead to passage by the Legislature this week.
When last we left AB 375, in July, the author, Assembly Education Committee Chairwoman Joan Buchanan, D-Alamo, was one vote shy of getting the bill out of the Senate Education Committee; the bill appeared bottled up for the year. But Buchanan has been negotiating with Sen. Carol Liu, chairwoman of the education committee, and agreed to three key amendments. With Liu’s support and crucial vote, AB 375 passed the Senate Education Committee on Tuesday and, after a visit to Senate Appropriations Committee, is likely headed to the Senate floor. The deadline for passing all bills is Friday.
Spurring calls for change was the case of elementary school teacher Mark Berndt, now awaiting trial on multiple molestation charges against students. Los Angeles Unified paid Berndt $40,000 in back pay and legal fees in 2012 on the condition that he not contest the district’s dismissal charges against him. Since then, the district has agreed to pay $30 million in settlements to dozens of children whose families have filed claims against it.
Groups representing school boards and teachers agree that the process for firing teachers,

Changing The Language From Anti-Testing To Pro-Whole Child - The Jose Vilson | The Jose Vilson:

Changing The Language From Anti-Testing To Pro-Whole Child

by JOSE VILSON on SEPTEMBER 12, 2013
in JOSE
I like getting into discussions with people who like saying “Jose, why are you against testing?”
Let me lay out the argument and the reason why, instead of referring to myself as anti-testing, I’m calling myself pro-whole-child.
The argument is that testing isn’t bad. We should have experts who look at the lay of the education land, help set standards for what children ought to learn at every grade, and then help develop assessments that help us get a glimpse as to whether students learned that material. Testing seems more stable, and less prone to error since these guys spend their working hours on developing precise problems and test them on children and adults to make certain that the problems absolutely mean to assess what they mean to assess. Plus, having these common assessments between grade levels could make for interesting longitudinal studies and provide critical feedback for teachers, parents, and students about student and teacher performance.
I hope I got that right because, as it turns out, I think there’s something inherently wrong with this.
To a certain extent, I do agree with having a viable, thorough curriculum from K-12 that expands on content knowledge, helps students question, and goes beyond teaching students how to multiply in high school. Often, it’s the students in the lower-income brackets that get tossed into the least

NEA Says Its Members “Strongly Support” Common Core?

September 12, 2013

Here we go again with the CCSS support propaganda from an organization that has accepted millions from Bill Gates to promote the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).
The National Education Association (NEA) wants you to want CCSS.
It conducted a survey.
Surprise, surprise.
NEA has decided to fully follow in the American Federation of Teachers’ (AFT’s) footsteps. AFT accepted Gates money for promoting the CCSS; so did NEA. AFTconducted a survey in which it reported that teachers ”overwhelmingly” approved of CCSS; NEA now has its own survey in which it reports that its members “strongly support” CCSS. The AFT survey result actually showed that most teachers surveyed “somewhat approve” of CCSS, yet AFT spun the result as one of “overwhelming” approval. Now NEA is spinning its 50% CCSS approval with “some reservations” as “strong approval.”
NEA must spread this “strong” approval message, for it has accepted millions to

Calls on Mayor Nutter, PA Gov. Corbett to Stop Political Attacks on Public Education, Public Services
LOS ANGELES—In a major show of unity through a strongly worded resolution, the AFL-CIO today condemned the political attacks by Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter on Philadelphia educators and other city public service employees, saying the attacks are intended to roll back the promise of equal opportunity, basic fairness and responsive government.
The AFL-CIO unanimously approved a resolution sponsored by the American Federation of Teachers and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees calling on Nutter to "stand up for a better Philadelphia for all" by putting politics aside and collaborating "with teachers and city municipal workers to find fair solutions through good-faith negotiations rather than using this manufactured fiscal crisis or the courts to attack collective bargaining and dismantle vital public services."
Delegates from the AFT, AFSCME, UNITE-HERE, the Philadelphia Central Labor Council and others recommended the resolution for AFL-CIO approval.

The Weekly Update: Predatory capitalism, privatization, sequestration and our children, Common Core Standards and opting out

Everyone is back in school, the privatizers are not letting up but parents, students and teachers are fighting back. Diane Ravitch is coming out with her new book on September 18th, a book that is totally awesome by the way. I will have a review posted on September 17th. We’ve got some great forums and events happening this Fall in Seattle, see the right hand column for information, and I am rested up, revved up and ready to go.
First up, It’s the poverty stupid.
Diane Ravitch in her new book Reign of Error, points out very clearly how poverty is many times a determining factor in the success of a student. It’s common sense, I know, but the corporate reformers choose to ignore that fact.
To follow is a clear example of how poverty erodes at the bright promise of our children’s futures and therefore the future of our nation.
While Congress and President Obama are debating bombing Syria as part of their “bomb everything bad” program and the corporate media continues to focus on nothing more than mindless chatter, the rest of us, particularly our children, are hurting.
