AFT's Weingarten on Trial Urban District Assessment Results

Weingarten: "These results show incremental progress despite the challenges urban schools face, but poverty and economic inequality—as economists and even the Pope have acknowledged—will stymie long-term gains unless policymakers face these issues head-on."
WASHINGTON—Statement by American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten on the Trial Urban District Assessment results:
"These results show incremental progress despite the challenges urban schools face, but poverty and economic inequality—as economists and even the Pope have acknowledged—will stymie long-term gains unless policymakers face these issues head-on.
"Noteworthy are the substantial gains in mathematics and reading made by D.C. fourth-graders since 2003, as they were the first tested group to benefit from the city's universal pre-K program. Conversely, Cleveland was the lowest-scoring district and had the smallest gains in mathematics; it also had the highest percentage of low-income students.
"Data like this is an important reflection point. Some would use it to double down on our country's testing fixation, which more and more is not simply taking the joy out of schools but is not even measuring the skills and knowledge necessary for students to be prepared for the 21st century. Instead, if we want to see sustainable, scalable progress for our kids, it's time to invest in strategies such as preparing teachers, giving them the time and tools to teach, providing students with project-based and experiential learning, and providing timely interventions like pre-K and tutoring to help disadvantaged students—as top-performing U.S. districts and countries do. We must also use assessments to inform instruction and student learning, not as a pretext to punish or sanction.
"Let's take a moment to honor and thank the teachers and students in our urban districts who work hard under difficult conditions."

This week, we're revisiting some of the top sessions from EWA's 66th National Seminar held at Stanford University. More than 5.3 million American public school students would struggle to understand this sentence.

These students need to be taught the English language in addition to the usual material in math, science and social studies, presenting a monumental challenge for educators nationwide, according to Patricia Gandara, a UCLA education professor whom President Barack Obama appointed to the Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics. She is also co-director of the Civil Rights Project at the University of California, Los Angeles.

“In the words of teachers themselves, they don’t feel qualified,” said Gandara,

Carmen Farina to be Named New NYC DOE Chancellor

A high level source within the NYC DOE has shared with The Crack Team at SBSB that Carmen Farina will be named as new chancellor of the Department of Education.

Another close source to The Crack Team has given Ms Farina a thumbs up and thinks naming her is a great choice.

Of course, the proof is in the pudding and we don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves with either praise or condemnation. What we do like is that Ms. Farina has risen through the ranks from teacher to principal to superintendent to deputy chancellor. Just with that on her resume she has more cred than anyone in the upper echelon of the DOE.

Just as an aside, our source shared with The Crack Team that to get rid of the current evaluation system we might have to give up retroactive raises. But that is a story for another time.

One way to tell what kind of chancellor Ms Farina will be is to check what the Post, deformers, hedge fund managers, and Eva have to say in the aftermath of making it official. If their

To get the most out of this blog, view Ted Talks 2011 – Knowledge Is Power.  #1:  Sir Ken Robinson; and  #5: Salman Kahn, and the Kahn Academy.
I selected these two excellent presentations for many reasons, but the most important reveal is when Bill Gates comes on stage with Salman Kahn. His reaction and comments – those of a major player in the reform movement – are perhaps the best example of what billionaires who have never done the hard work necessary to understand our public schools and what teachers do, create ideological, (not real) solutions to complex problems.
These billionaires are able to force the adoption of harmful and destructive ideologies, the consequences of their limited understanding, on America’s schools. Perhaps they have influence because politicians and some bureaucrats assume that Wealth = Intelligence?  How else can one explain inBloom, Common Core, High Stakes Testing, Race To The Top, NCLB, SAT,  teacher evaluation based on false data from student test scores, and other education-adverse implants?
“Reformers,” like Gates, Broad, Rhee, Duncan (and many others) have never learned mastery of subjects and how to teach them, basic knowledge of learning styles, maturation/learning
