SB 830′s Real Intent

The true intent of SB 830 revealed: Stop working Floridians from having a voice in the political and legislative process.

A secret, late-filed amendment was offered just minutes before a vote on the bill. The amendment was designed to confuse, confound and hide the fact that this legislation is nothing but an attempt to shut working Floridians out of the legislative and political process.

Proponents of this legislation claim that union members have “no right to speak up against how their union dues are being used.” They also claim that the new version of the bill will eliminate the use of taxpayers’ dollars in the collection of funds used for political purposes.

The bill actually takes away a union member’s voice in our political process.

While the amendment permits limited payroll deduction of union dues to continue, it creates governmental intrusion into a union’s business and prevents unions from “directly or indirectly” engaging in political activities, even if dues are collected without using payroll deduction.

What you need to know about SB 830:

  • The bill uses broad, ambiguous and overreaching language to prohibit a labor union from engaging in political speech.

For this post, you need to click the links in order to understand and then actually believe the story below. The researchers in the links, whether they are a peer-reviewed professor, Diane Ravitch, or a 60 Minutes crew, are far more credible than I, a retired principal, can be.

The last decade of school reform in America has been based on a lie — a well-known sham, often referred to asthe Texas miracle. Not just a little ole lie, but a deliberate fabrication and a cover-up. (Read Diane Ravitch’sexplanation.)

In the 1990′s, Houston Superintendent of Schools, Rod Paige, made principals and administrators accountable for the drop-out rate and for test scores. When those two criteria did not improve at a particular school, Paige

This past weekend, I spent some time with my Dominican parents. To be specific, my Dominican mother and stepfather, both of whom enjoy the Dominican satellite channels offered on Time Warner Cable. They’ll watch shows rooted in guttural comedy, scantily-clad voluptuous women, and nationalism sprinkled throughout the programming. They laugh, shake, dance, and yell at the television, even when the situation doesn’t call for it. My parents respond to the automatic trigger of the palm trees, the beige dust rising after Passats sweep by the rocks of the highways. I’m shaken by images of lighter complexions featured within the studios and darker hues outside of the studio.

Even from far away, their perceptions about Blackness get reinforced by the TV they want to see.

It was only a few years ago that I got my mom to admit her own Blackness. While I don’t believe all Latinos are

This past Friday and Saturday, I attended the 1st annual Rocky Mountain Early Childhood Conference at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. Friday’s featured luncheon speaker was the Harlem Children’s Zone’s (HCZ) CEO, and mover-and-shaker, Geoffrey Canada. I once counted myself an undisputed admirer of Mr. Canada, after I read Paul Tough’s book Whatever it Takes. Of course, that was before the spectacle of movies featuring the cranky rhetoric of Canada such as The Lottery and Waiting for Superman. That was when Canada started to lose my admiration. Why? Because I’m reflexively against cultural drawing-of-lines-in-the-sand,

I have benefited from the process. So have many other teachers.

Allow me to offer once again a promotional film in which I appear. Pass it on to your schools and school systems and policy makers as to why they should support the national board process.
