"Eligibility Requirements for American Legion Membership

Military members currently on active duty, who are serving the United States honorably, anywhere in the world, or have served honorably during any of the following eligible war eras, are invited to be members of The American Legion.

• April 6, 1917 to Nov. 11, 1918 (World War I)
• Dec. 7, 1941 to Dec. 31, 1946 (World War II)
• June 25, 1950 to Jan. 31, 1955 (Korean War)
• Feb. 28, 1961 to May 7, 1975 (Vietnam War)
• Aug. 24, 1982 to July 31, 1984 (Lebanon / Grenada)
• Dec. 20, 1989 to Jan. 31, 1990 (Panama)

This week, I'm going to try to unpack Crown's preamble to Jonah Edelman's subsequent lucid "view to a kill" speech, but I think it's important to realize that there are a few things going on here.

1. This isn't solely about public education policy. This is how they're going to kill off everything they view as an "entitlement" for non-wealthy people.

2. The strategy will work across a range of issues: create a lot of momentum around a narrative, buy off key

I teach in a school in a part of town that many people call “urban”. I teach in class setting that many people call “special education”. Most people don’t know these things about me. They just know I am a teacher. They often assume that it is in suburbia and that my students are typical i.e. general education students. The reason being is that most of the time I talk about my students as individuals. I talk about the fun things my students do, the things we learned, how I rode my bicycle to school, and other random teacher anecdote type things.

When I tell most lay people (non teachers) where I teach in a neighborhood in southern Los Angeles, people often gasp and make an interesting comment.

I have heard variations of, “It must be challenging,” or “Is it dangerous?” or just, “Wow!!!”

When I tell them I teach special education they say, “That is so nice of you to do that.”

These are the reasons that I never start off my conversation about the children that I teach with the neighborhood they live in or their ability levels. I know the single story story that has been told. I know that “urban” is just code for black and poor or Latino and poor. I know once most people hear “abc” neighborhood or “def” syndrome their

In an unexpected action, Los Angeles school officials Tuesday voted against renewing the operating agreements of two charter schools involved in a cheating scandal last year. The decision could lead to a shutdown of all six schools run by the Crescendo organization.

The vote by the Los Angeles Board of Education was based on the revelation at Tuesday’s meeting that a principal implicated in the cheating scandal had been hired by the outside organization brought in to manage the Crescendo schools. L.A. Unified officials had explicitly directed that no former Crescendo principals could work either for Crescendo or for the Celerity charter organization, the outside group that was brought in.

“This was beyond not following the agreement we had,” said L.A. schools Supt. John Deasy. “I would use the word 'directly lied to.' "

Duke, as usual you hit the nail on the head--and squarely. Having spent over 16 years working in the "real" world, i.e. the private sector/corporate America, before returning to my first and beloved profession (teaching), I was hit with culture shock. At first I found it a bit dismaying, and then just "weird" that a 22 year old "kid" was doing exactly the same job I was doing. Maybe not quite as well (hehe), but the same job with the same responsibilities and expectations. And I, with over 20 years more professional, teaching/training, business, and life experience, was only making about $7,000 more (that was the "dismaying" part, since my 16 years in corporate America only earned me one additional step on the pay scale).

I could not think of ANY job in the private sector in which someone with over 20 years more

The Atlanta public schools are embroiled in a massive cheating scandal. It's a situation that's rippling far beyond the city's borders, because the alleged cheating involved the same sort of standardized tests used all over the country.

Most surprising is that it's not students who are accused, but 178 principals and teachers. Fifty-six schools were investigated, and cheating was found in 44, or nearly 80 percent, as CBS News correspondent Mark Strassmann reports.

It's a scathing report: A decade of systemic cheating in Atlanta's school system by the adults.
