From the IEA: “On Saturday, February 26, 2011, there is a rally scheduled at the state capitol in Madison, WI at 3 pm that will last about an hour. There will be impromptu activities scheduled before and after the event. We are encouraging asking our staff to organize our members to attend this event. Governors: Lay Off Teachers and Worsen Your Budget Woes

Large numbers of school districts will be laying off teachers in the coming weeks in a desperate attempt to balance their very weak budgets. Meanwhile, Governors across the U.S., Democrat and Republican, alike, are demanding cuts to teachers’ pensions as a way to help balance their even weaker budgets. The problem is that by firing teachers, they will have less money going into the pension systems, thus exacerbating the problem.

In California, the CalSTRS system lost 25% over the past several years due to

Scott Walker is so busted.

Wisconsin public service workers have said it for weeks.

Governor Walker’s bill to outlaw collective bargaining has nothing to do with budget short falls. It’s a union busting act, pure and simple.

But now Ian Murphy, a self-described gonzo journalist for the Buffalo Beast pretended he was right-wing billionaire David Koch (pronounce it any way you like) and fooled the foolish Governor into taking his call.

Walker admits to everything.

According to the audio, Walker told him:

That statehouse GOPers were plotting to hold Democratic senators’ pay until

Mayor Kevin Johnson is in Washington, D.C., today with education reformer Michelle Rhee for the launch of a national campaign aimed at eliminating "last in, first out" policies that base teacher layoffs on seniority.

The announcement came at a meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. Johnson is the founding chair of the group's Public School Task Force.

"We have to eliminate old policies that satisfy adult needs, but have absolutely no bearing on

The Answer Sheet - Rhee’s new campaign is not about the kids

Rhee’s new campaign is not about the kids

Former D.C. Chancellor Michelle Rhee likes to say that everything she does is for kids. But the first big campaign of her “Students First” organization, announced Wednesday, isn't really about them. Rhee announced today what she is calling the national Save Great Teachers campaign. What it’s not about: Giving great teachers what they say they want -- more support to do their jobs in school. What it is about: Getting state legislatures to eliminate policies that require school districts, in the event of layoffs, to let the last-hired employees go first. This way, principals can supposedly save great young teachers and get rid of lousy older teachers.

Should we un-do due process?

With all the recent attacks on teachers’ due process rights, and on teacher unionism and organizing, continuing reports of retaliation against ethical teachers continue to disturb me. For instance, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution recently reported on teacher whistleblowers who have been targeted for helping expose local testing scandals there:

His bosses had no trouble dismissing Ryan Abbott’s report of cheating on standardized tests in an Atlanta school. They simply cast him in a self-fulfilling role, Abbott says: “disgruntled teacher.”

Abbott was already on probation, after four years at Benteen Elementary. His students had not posted the big increases in test scores seen in other classrooms. Yet he had the audacity to level charges against a popular colleague. After word of

The 97-union South Central Federation of Labor of Wisconsin is laying groundwork for a general strike if Gov. Scott Walker succeeds in enacting legislation that would strip most bargaining rights from most public employee unions.
Federation president Jim Cavanaugh said Tuesday that he couldn’t predict how many unions might take part in a strike, but opposition to Walker has

New Action website

We’ve been making some effort to keep the New Action website better updated.
  • We’ll keep getting DA leaflets up
  • We’ll link a bit more to current issues
  • We’ll include some information on what we are doing
  • We are including occasional signed pieces
  • Comments are open (moderated)
For example, on the events in Wisconsin we’ve put up videos from the WEAC, the state AFL-CIO’s tv ad, the text of an Egyptian trade union leader’s solidarity statement (w/video link), a list of proposals New Action madeto the UFT leadership, and an on-line petition to build support for the public employees, including teachers, in Wisconsin.
