George Will, the conservative writer frets that Illinois, which he calls “the worst-governed state,” is losing population. He has figured out why.
The chief problem in Illinois, according to George, is progressive education and a proposal calling for reflective and culturally responsive teaching.
I only wish it were so.
Forget about Chicago’s three decades of industrial disinvestment and police violence. Forget about a tax policy that punishes working families with a flat income tax and the imposition of high local taxes on revenue poor towns and school districts.
The list of reasons Illinois has lost population is long and we are not alone.
But Will is convinced the chief reason is CONTINUE READING: Crazy George Will and “Culturally Responsive Teaching and Leading.” – Fred Klonsky

Think of a Leader. Who did you picture? | Teacher in a strange land
It was a fascinating article in the NY Times, about a management training exercise that directs groups of people to draw a leader. Originally designed to bypass detailed verbal discussion about leadership in groups where multiple languages were spoken, the assignment merely asked participants to sketch their conception of a leader, with as much detail as possible.
I was especially interested because this draw-a-leader technique was one I have used, many times, in workshops around teacher leadership, for diverse audiences. I can testify that if you want to clear a room of school administrators, who suddenly have to step out in the hallway for an ‘emergency’ call, start passing out chart paper, crayons, and markers–and ask them to draw something.
Management trainers and organizational psychologists who use this exercise agree:
In terms of gender, the results are almost always the same. Both men and women almost always draw men. Even when the drawings are gender neutral [which is uncommon], the majority of groups present the drawing using language that indicates male (he) rather CONTINUE READING: Think of a Leader. Education Matters: Poor leadership is destroying the district.
I want to acknowledge that being a superintendent is undoubtedly a hard job, and the powers that be in Florida often work to undermine public education. That being said, I can’t imagine a superintendent doing worse than Greene. Her leadership is just plain bad, and don’t take my word for it, take the Times Unions.
The indifference to the pandemic.
Adding to people’s plates.
Forcing staff into the buildings and encouraging more students to do so.
The indifference to the plight of veteran teachers and staff
Then as hundreds of millions go to the pockets of charter owners, I don’t believe the referendum will be the panacea it was sold as.
The terrible contact tracing.
Giving in to the state over and over again.
I could go, but instead, I will let the Times Union do so for me.
From the Times Union, my comments in bold.
"We have to show that with students who have poor attendance or are failing, we've done everything we can to bring them back to brick-and-mortar," Greene said at a School Board meeting. "We sent notice saying if that was the case, we would call them back to brick-and-mortar. Once that happens and those families don't CONTINUE READING: Education Matters: Poor leadership is destroying the district.

NYC Educator: Bad Admin and Crickets
Do you feel like the kid in the picture sometimes? An awful lot of teachers do. It seems, particularly with an evaluation system that bares its teeth at us, that a lot of supervisors speak to us like that.
I began as an English teacher. I ended up as an ESL teacher by happy accident. For one thing, I could never find a permanent job as an English teacher. By the time I did, I was already enamored of teaching kids from other countries. I turned down an appointment, took a job playing guitar in the worst Irish wedding band on earth (it paid well), and waited until I actually had the credits to teach what I wanted.
Nonetheless, I'm a lifelong reader, and my preference is fiction. Fiction places you in a position to see and feel other viewpoints, but it's looked down upon by the geniuses in Albany, not to mention the Common Core architects. NY State has dropped the Common Core name, but fiction is still devalued. Instead we make kids read tedious tomes that interest them not at all. I'd argue it would be better to have them read comics, like the kid in the picture, and learn to love reading, rather than dread it. Of course, I'm only one voice.
Still, there are a lot of crazy administrators. Look, for one example, at the large number of them who insist on enrolling as teachers in Google Classroom. There is absolutely no viable rationale for that. Most of us now place all our grades online. Anyone can see them. All of the assignments we give are available to anyone registered as a CONTINUE READING: NYC Educator: Bad Admin and Crickets

Jeff Bryant in The Progressive: Bad Leadership Is Plunging Public Schools Into a Crisis | Ed Politics
Michael Barbour, a professor at Touro University California and an expert on K-12 online learning, believes that more than half of the nation’s school superintendents “should be fired.”
His blistering criticism stems from the fact that, deep into the 2020-2021 school year, many schools are still struggling with virtual learning during the pandemic.
Stories of school districts’ online learning systems crashing are widespread. Teachers complain about not being included in decisions about online curriculum and pedagogy. Alarming numbers of students are not engaged or not showing up, especially in low-income areas and among communities of color.
The chaos is especially concerning given that 76 percent of parents say their children are attending school remotely, either full time or part time, according to a recent nationwide survey. Moreover, a majority of parents, 54 percent, think that improving online learning is more important than figuring out how to reopen schools for in-person instruction.
“Any school leader who didn’t reach out to teachers to ask what had worked well and what didn’t, and then use that CONTINUE READING: Jeff Bryant in The Progressive: Bad Leadership Is Plunging Public Schools Into a Crisis | Ed Politics

Jeff Bryant: How Bad Leadership Created a Crisis for Public Schools During the Pandemic | Diane Ravitch's blog
Jeff Bryant reports here that too many school districts failed to prepare teachers how to teach remotely, leaving them to improvise.
He begins:

Improving remote learning would have meant creating spaces for teachers to collaborate and share models of effective online instruction and lesson planning.

Russ on Reading: Ten Roles of the Instructional Leader in Literacy
Listener
One good way to understand what instructional needs a particular teacher or group of teachers has is to listen to them. We all come into these leadership positions with preconceived notions about what good literacy instruction looks like, but in order to lead we must first understand the needs, desires, understandings, and concerns that the teachers have. Sitting down in small groups and with individuals to talk about literacy instruction from the teacher's perspective is a place to start.
Non-Evaluative Observer
The role of leader often involves observations that end with formal evaluations. In order to understand where teachers are in their literacy CONTINUE READING: Russ on Reading: Ten Roles of the Instructional Leader in Literacy

TODAY'S STATEMENT FROM THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT VETERANS -AUGUST 28, 2020 - DSA NORTH STAR
Washington Post
Fulfilling our Obligations, and
Passing the Torch
"When I was the rabbi of the Jewish community in Berlin under the Hitler regime, I learned many things. The most important thing that I learned under those tragic circumstances was that bigotry and hatred are not the most urgent problem. The most urgent, the most disgraceful, the most shameful and the most tragic problem is silence.
Rabbi Jacob Prinz, Speech at the March on Washington, August 28, 1963
"I appeal to all of you to get into this great revolution that is sweeping this nation. Get in and stay in the streets of every city, every village and hamlet of this nation until true freedom comes, until the revolution of 1776 is complete. We must get in this revolution and complete the revolution...."
John Lewis, Speech at the March on Washington, August 28, 1963
We in the Black Freedom Movement of the 1950s and 1960s held countless mass meetings in churches and community halls in Black communities throughout the Jim Crow South. On August 28, 1963, for the first and only time, we gathered before the Lincoln Memorial for a mass meeting on a national scale, joined and witnessed by the entire country. We called this mass meeting "The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom".
No one who was there can ever forget it.
We were there.
With approximately 250,000 in attendance, and tens of millions watching on network TV, the March on Washington was the largest gathering for racial justice, economic equality and human rights ever assembled to date. Martin Luther King, Jr. called it "the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation."
We are surviving members of Dr. King's inner circle, student activist leaders from the Nashville sit-in movement and Mississippi voting rights campaign and singers who performed from the stage at that historic gathering in Washington. Some of us 2 worked primarily with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC); others were among the leadership of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Dr. Clarence B. Jones, as lawyer for Dr. King, and Courtland Cox, representing SNCC, served on the planning committee for the March with lead organizers Bayard Rustin and A. Philip Randolph.
The March on Washington took place fifty-seven years ago today.
We remember it like yesterday. We remember Dr. King's iconic speech, as we remember each of those who addressed the crowd: fourteen of the CONTINUE READING: Building a global progressive network to combat fascism - DSA NORTH STAR
