Ms. Katie's Ramblings: The Exhaustion of The Longest School Day

Ms. Katie's Ramblings: The Exhaustion of The Longest School Day:

The Exhaustion of The Longest School Day

I received this blog post from a special educator currently working in the Chicago Public Schools.   The writer wished to remain anonymous, understandably.  I have heard similar stories from far too many teachers out there.  Rahm and his politically-motivated Longer School Day are going to drive away all our very best educators.  This particular teacher is an absolutely phenomenal teacher and this story absolutely breaks my heart.

Chicago Public Schools defines the "Full School Day" as…
A richer school day… one that provides additional instructional time in both elementary and high schools.  This means more time on task in reading, math, history and science.  In addition, it provides time for a real recess so kids can exercise and refresh.   The Full School Day provides students with the time they need for quality instruction in the classroom with their teachers, as well as new

Whiplash over at the Times

If you were someone who had moved to Seattle in the last year, you might be forgiven for trying to figure out what it is that the Seattle Times is doing in support of public school levies.

Most of the time, according to them, the district can't do anything right (and this is over, say, the last two years when, coincidentally, there has been a majority power shift on the Board and we have a new superintendent who has received tepid support from them).

First, the Times writes an editorial in support of them but with a lot of finger-wagging especially around leadership (and not, as you might suspect, around transparency of dollars spent).

Then the Times has an article on the levies that mentions only one group opposing BEX.  Meanwhile there have been at least three sets of people going against the BEX levy.  Three sets.   And yet, the Times, in its reporting,

Teacher X Supports The Movement of Rank and File Educators (MORE Caucus) In Upcoming UFT Elections

Like Popeye eating a can of spinach, or A-Rod shooting up some HGH, I felt reinvigorated driving home from yesterday's Movement of Rank and File Educators (MORE) meeting.

I admit I was skeptical about the movement, in fact any movements, and sadly I said as much on these pages. I was wrong, I was mistaken.

As I am heading up the West Side Highway on my way home yesterday afternoon I place a call to a friend of mine who has been an ATR for the last 3 years. I figure that as an ATR he can help distribute MORE

On Tuesday, Washington County Commissioners will vote on a proposal to expand Beaverton's enterprise zone. They should vote NO on any expansions in unincorporatedWashington County. That specifically includes Nike's World Headquarters "near Beaverton."

In 2005, Salem lawmakers granted Nike headquarters freedom from "forced annexation" for 35 years. If the “near-Beaverton” headquarters is included in Beaverton’s enterprise zone, the promised $150 million expansion (new buildings and machinery) will not be taxed for up to 5 years. 26 Acts of Kindness Campaign Still Inspiring Schools

By Cindy Long
When a children’s book editor from National Geographic visited a group of third graders at Carlin Springs Elementary School in Arlington, Virginia, she fielded a bunch of questions about wildlife. Topping the list – what’s the deadliest creature on the planet? It’s not a shark or a lion, as some of the children guessed, so she gave them a hint: It’s an annoying insect that causes a lot of itching in the summertime.
Rebecca Baines reads to Carlin Springs students
“The answer is the mosquito,” said Rebecca Baines of National Geographic Kids, who delivered a box full of the organization’s best-selling nonfiction children’s books to the school’s library. “In many countries, the mosquito carries deadly diseases like malaria.”
Carlin Springs Elementary was one of 26 schools that National Geographic Kids visited as part of the 26 Acts of Kindness project – a glimmer of goodness after the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut. The kids at Carlin Springs didn’t know National Geographic was participating in program that resulted from the shooting – they were just happy about the new books and to hear stories about animals, like a Russian bear named Yasha.
“The tragedy at Newtown reminds us how fragile life is, and how innocent and treasured our children are,” said Carlin Springs librarian Meg Shryver. “Working at a school really brings it home, and it’s so wonderful that

A Kindergarten Teacher Stands Up to Bill Gates

An Open Letter to Bill Gates,
By Ruth Rodriguez-Fay

American education has a long history of infatuation with fads and ill-considered ideas. The current obsession with making schools work like a business may be the worst of them, for it threatens to destroy public education. Who will stand up to the tycoons and politicians and tell them so?

  - Diane Ravitch, The Death and Life of the Great American School  System, How Testing and Choice are Undermining Education.

Dear Mr. Gates,

Your Foundation contributions always seem to make for interesting prime time news. The real story about what is actually happening on the ground where your market-driven policies are now the “norm” is relegated to other venues such as academic research, progressive blogs and media outlets.

While it is honorable for anyone with your wealth to do whatever possible to give back to the community, the community that helped you make your wealth, your history of failed experiments with so-called market-driven, data-based education is well documented.

The test and punish, high stakes testing mandates and the calls for teacher accountability as a means towards improving education have clearly failed an entire generation. Despite this failed policy,

Charter School Finance Footnoted

Why this Topic & What I Intend to Do

First a little bit of my qualifications: I was trained at FAST/AFL-CIO in the 1995 to do deep corporate research of all kinds to dissect the financial and operational disclosures of employers in many industries including many leading edu-profiteers like Edison.  I had a hand in the Ohio Federation of Teachers exposure work on David Brennan and White Hat Management.  I had a hand in the years of exposure work on the Walton family.  Most recently I was an under-utilized campaigner at the American Federation of Teachers and had a hand in many unpublicized or quiet projects.  Now I am out from under AFT publicity restrictions.  I can do and say what I want to whomever I please, thus I am doing this as my hobby.  In most part because it needs to be done and the teacher unions won’t do it right.  Also I want to stay connected on the side of the angels defending public education as a fundamental right for all kids in America.
While I plan to do the leg work on charter school financial dealings and comment regularly here and out on the other notable education blogs, I want to periodically try to show where these financial disclosures are available to the public and teach people to fish around themselves.  These loose trainings will be titled “Fish Around and Start Things” for each posting. First will be a post on EMMA, the primary online resource for municipal bonds which include nearly every charter school bond filing.  There will be other trainings on how to insert public scrutiny earlier and earlier in the bond issuance process so defenders of public education can learn how to intervene and possibly block funding for any clearly disastrous charter schools.
My inspirations:
  • The workers everywhere who risk their economic security to create new unions despite the legal obstacles intentionally built by the U.S. government
  • Neil Young and Van Morrison: Because I don’t have a musical cell in my body, I had to apply my creativity to taking on employers
  • Diane Ravitch: Because she show such intellectual honesty every single second and committed herself to winning the constant debates as a public intellectual
  • Local Initiative Support Corporation: Because this group tries to do so much good but has become an unashamed salesman for the banks profiting from charter school financial engineering
My windmills:
  • Fethullah Gulen and his trusted field general Hasan Ali Yurtsever: Because it takes great organizational skills to deploy tens thousands of followers around the globe and get the U.S. government to pay $400 million a year to “employ” thousands of barely employable adherents in this country.  Only in America! There will be a series on the bonds issued by Gulen schools starting with Chicago Mathematics and Science Academy where Yurtsever briefly served as a board member in 2010 before being chased off.
  • Juan Rangel: Because he may yet become the next fallen NAPCS saviorbut not before UNO hangs its bond debt on its investors

Ken Previti: Brevard County Schools Did Not Have to Close

Ken Previti writes this comment about the three public schools closed in Brevard County over the objections of the parents. The best solution: Elect a new school board. Run for school board. Organize and mobilize.
One harsh fact needs to be remembered about school closings, teacher evaluations and school ranking by student test scores. The total amount that “needed” to be cut from the budget by closing three Brevard schools was identical to the amount “needed” to build the new charter school demanded by the appointed Florida State

What a Good Public School District Looks Like

“If you want to see Superman solve the problem of the day with the fix of the day, go to

drill-skill learning and a standardized test, go the DMV. If you want to make money off the
backs of kids, open a small business that sells video games, not tests.
If you want to see authentic learning, go to a public school where you will find a proud

New Blog Will “Follow the Money”

I just heard from a new blogger who has spent years quietly investigating the money trail behind the privatization movement.
He has decided to be silent no more.

It is called “Charter School Finance Footnoted.” Its subtitle is:  ”Public funds lining private pockets.”
And he adds, as a descriptor:

Upcoming Special Events

Monday night, the 18th, I'll be moderating a tele-townhall about standardized testing.  It's being sponsored by Fair Test ,"the National Center for Fair and Open Testing that works to end the misuses and flaws of standardized testing AND to ensure that the evaluation of our students, teachers and schools is done in a fair, open, valid and educationally beneficial manner."

It starts at 7p.m.  and the call-in number is
1-888-955-5369, PIN 514597

Speakers include Garfield student body president, Obadiah Perry; Mallory Clarke, Garfield High teacher, and the executive director of Fair Test, Dr. Monty Neill.

Tuesday night, the 19th, the smartest girl in the room, ed reformer Michelle Rhee, will be in town to push her book at Town Hall.  There is a protest starting at 6 p.m. that I hope to attend because Rhee should know that there are real people who do not believe what she is saying (or selling).   A good overview of Rhee is here at the Seattle Education blog.  Town Hall is at 1119 8th Avenue.

UPDATE: The tale of the pendulum and the bus + The Lowest Expectation of Them All – @ the chalk face

The Lowest Expectation of Them All – @ the chalk face:

The tale of the pendulum and the bus.

For the first time ever, @the chalkface presents a children’s story.
There once was a shiny pendulum.  It was a happy pendulum.  Everyday it would swing one way and then swing back.  Day after day the shiny pendulum would swing one way and then back.  The pendulum was happy because it always knew that as soon as it would swing so far out one way it would ALWAYS reach a point a swing back.  Over and over again.  Back and forth.  Consistent and predictable.  Life was good for the shiny pendulum.
There once was a yellow school bus.  Legend has it that a long time ago (11-12 years ago) it was happy.  You see back then the bus and the pendulum had vey similar lives.  The bus would pick up children in the morning, take them to schools, and then bring them home. Over and over again.  Back and forth.  Consistent and predictable.
However, one day while returning to the parking garage the bus picked up an efficiency expert.  The expert insisted that the bus was performing “below basic” and was “failing.”  According to the expert

The Lowest Expectation of Them All

ImageCorporate education reformers love to rave about how schools that “beat the odds” are full of teachers with “high expectations”.  There are echoes of George W’s “soft bigotry of low expectations” in this mantra implying that in the past, teachers–stifled no doubt by those innovation-hating unions–all had “low expectations” for their students and somehow THAT is why students from low-income backgrounds struggled in school.  Regardless of the obstacles of poverty, homelessness, underfunding/lack of resources, large class sizes, mental health problems, special needs, or not yet knowing English, the rationale is that a teacher who just BELIEVES a child can graduate and go to college can make it happen (with a little grit and maybe a longer school day to boot.  Oh, and don’t forget to hang up college banners in the hallways and talk about “college and career readiness” all the time.)  This refrain is a constant in charter franchises, Teach for America circles, and the EdReform movement as a whole.
(From datboyct.deviantart.com )
Still, when you look at the schools supposedly “beating the odds” you begin to see another refrain besides the

All Education Matters: Interview with Jerry Ashton: Interview with Jerry Ashton by Cryn Johannsen I now consider Jerry a long-time friend. He's interviewed me on several occasions, and I had the pleasure of meeting him when I went to Occupy in NYC last year. In fact, Jerry took me on a tour of the camp, just a week before it was demolished. I am grateful to know Jerry and appreciate his support of my work. Here's my latest interview with him - http://wgrnradio.com/blog/2013/02/15/from-graduating-class-to-indentured-class-will-america-continue-to-eat-its-young/ Check it out. It's... more »

Why Educators’ Wages Must Be Revamped Now | toteachornototeach: Why Educators’ Wages Must Be Revamped Now by aristotlethewise Why Educators’ Wages Must Be Revamped Now By Eric A. Hanushek It is no secret that some school districts spend their money better than others. One can easily find groups of districts with the same student demographics and with the same expenditure levels producing very different levels of student achievement. Put another way, some (many?) districts are spending more than they need to spend, based on what other districts show is possible. Economists would su... more »

Is "Scalable" a Code Word for Top-Down Reform? - Living in Dialogue - Education Week Teacher: Is "Scalable" a Code Word for Top-Down Reform? by Anthony Cody About a week ago, John Thompson posted a note in which he conceded that "Educators who oppose the testing mania must admit that our preferred strategies would require high-quality implementation, and neither do we know how to scale them up." *I want to explore this idea of "scalability," because I think we may have a problem here*. As I wrote in a comment to his post, we have been told that the only way schools can improve is... more »

Even #progressive media can’t report #education in helpful ways, @maddow – @ the chalk face: Even #progressive media can’t report #education in helpful ways, @maddow by Chalk Face, PhD [image: Corporate Media = Corporate Lies] I listened to this segment on satellite radio the other night. Rachel Maddow was talking the President’s pre-K plan. Here’s more about it from the Maddow Blog. At this point, I can’t even discern who the guest was on the show, some dude. He was clearly an economist. He did some study on the benefits of Pre-K as a worthwhile “investment.” I don’t necessarily ... more »

Jersey Jazzman: Can't Deny the Truth About Segregating Charters Anymore: Can't Deny the Truth About Segregating Charters Anymore The charter cheerleaders have been telling us, over and over again, that charters are "public schools" that "must take everyone." Too bad for them that the truth keeps getting in the way: Students may be asked to submit a 15-page typed research paper, an original short story, or a handwritten essay on the historical figure they would most like to meet. There are interviews. Exams. And pages of questions for parents to answer, including: How do you inten... more »

From Portfolios to Parasites: The Unfortunate Path of U.S. Charter School Policy « School Finance 101: From Portfolios to Parasites: The Unfortunate Path of U.S. Charter School Policy by schoolfinance101 [image: Slide1] I recall several years ago attending an initial organizing meeting for a special interest group on Charter Schools at the American Educational Research Association. Note to outsiders – AERA has several special interest groups, some research oriented, some advocacy oriented… many somewhere in between. These are member organized groups and many are very small. Seattle Schools Community Forum: Rainier Beach High School Flyer: Rainier Beach High School Flyer by Charlie Mas I got a promotional flyer from Rainier Beach High School. It came on an email from the Rainier Beach family support worker/marketing coordinator Virginia Owens. Here is the flyer: While I support the efforts of Rainier Beach High School to notify families about their programs and to promote them. I support the assignment of "marketing coordinator" duties to someone at Rainier Beach (though I think Director DeBell would be uncomfortable with it). That said, I'm not cra... more »

Diane Ravitch's blog: If You Watch Oprah’s Show About New Orleans….. by dianerav A teacher in New Orleans writes: Oprah’s documentary series about John McDonogh High School in New Orleans was moved to tonight @ 8p Central Time, in order to follow Beyonce’s show. Please comment on Oprah’s page, if you find that her show does not accurately tell the whole story, and if your perspective on the history of the school is different. I personally find the preview to be highly stereotypical about New Orleans, it’s mostly black unionized teachers (pre-charter), black students, the need for ... more »

Jersey Jazzman: As Catholic Schools Fall, Charters Rise: As Catholic Schools Fall, Charters Rise by Duke Across the country, *Catholic schools are dying*. And I'm not talking about the elite, country club-ish schools to which people like Chris Christie send their kids; no, I'm talking about inner-city and small suburban parish Catholic schools. As is the case in many businesses on their last legs, the purveyors of Catholic schools are attempting to convince themselves that their biggest problem is marketing. Here in Jersey, the Newark Diocese just hired a layperson to rebrand... more »

The Weekly Cheddar : blue cheddar: WPRI Surveys Private Schools, Concludes “Wisconsin is Failing to Help Students with Disabilities” by AnnieJo The conservative think-tank Wisconsin Public Research Institute (WPRI) has issued a report on the failings of education in Wisconsin, just days before Governor Walker is slated to release his 2013/2015 state budget proposal. You might expect, given that the governor has been talking for months about using the budget to expand Milwaukee-like voucher programs into communities that don’t want them, that WPRI’s priority immediately before the ... more »
