The Empty Suit

I finally had a minute to watch the entire grilling, in which Bernie Sanders talks about the very same heist that Michael Moore spoke about in Madison, and Arne Duncan does his best to put sentences together in response.

It really is remarkable that the president of the United States leans on Arne Duncan for policy advice. Everyone agrees that Arne Duncan is the nicest guy in town, and I believe it. What I also see in Arne Duncan is a guy who has never won an election and never could and never will, a guy who's never actually had to apply for a job and earn it on merit, a guy whose reliance on platitudes is mind-numbing (watch at about 7:40), and a guy whose core political emptiness represents the exact kind of vacuum that nature abhors and that quickly gets filled with gas. In Arne Duncan's case, the gas is emanating from sources that oppose virtually everything Barack Obama

Last week Seattle threw out their Broad-trained schools superintendent.

I attended two back to back educational conferences this week. One was a vendor supported conference for invited administrators held in NYC, and the other was a teacher sponsored Unconference at Rutgers University. Both conferences expected an attendance of about 300 participants and neither saw that happen. I came away from both conferences with useful information, but only one offered more inspiration.

For those of you who are unaware of what an Unconference is, you are not alone. I reinforced this lack of awareness with every conversation I had with any administrator I conversed with at this first get together. Since I was headed to the second conference, or unconference at the conclusion of the first, it was a natural addition to any discussion I had. Most of the administrators were unaware as to what an unconference was, or that it even was a developing form of Professional Development. They had no idea that so many unconferences

Mayor Bloomberg was roundly booed at the annual Queens St. Patrick’s Day parade on Saturday, for threatening to lay off of over 4,000 teachers and his attack on their seniority rights. Check out the video below and excerpts from the Daily News, NY Post and NY1:

Chants of "Save our Teachers" rang out from pockets of the green-clad crowd that lined Newport Ave. and Rockaway Beach Blvd. in Belle Harbor….

Anthony Hannon, 80:….“What he’s doing to our teachers and our Fire Department – it’s shameful. Who cares about bike lanes? He’s an idiot,” sputtered Hannon. ….

"The classrooms are already overcrowded and now he wants to lay off thousands of teachers?"asked Jeanne O'Leary, who has been teaching at nearby Public School 104 for 10 years.

We Must Change the Narrative About Public Education: Guest Blog by Diane Ravitch

As the protests in Wisconsin dominate national news, and the White House and Congress gear up for reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA, currently called "No Child Left Behind"), we have a unique opportunity to put to rest some of the inaccurate narratives that have come to dominate debates around education policy, and to lay the foundations for a set of policies that can achieve our broader societal goals for children.

Myth #1: The Achievement Gap is Widening

Central to the current focus on using standardized tests to hold teachers and schools accountable is the belief that low-income children, especially minority children, are losing academic ground, and that weak schools and teachers with low expectations are to blame. In reality, African-American fourth graders have gained so much ground over the past two decades – when their schools were ostensibly failing them miserably – that they now score higher, on average, on reliable (NAEP) math tests than their white peers did as recently as 1992. And the very lowest-scoring students have seen the largest gains. White students

There is a disconnect between our people and our politics, as Jon Walker points out after almost every national poll. People favor government policies that help people, like Social Security and Medicare; and want to stop wasting money on foreign entanglements, raise taxes on the richest Americans, and cut programs that the Defense Department says aren’t needed. The Congress, and particularly the Republicans aren’t listening to those majorities. Instead, they cut taxes on the rich, assault Social Security and Medicare, and buy unnecessary equipment for the military. It almost looks like the elites run things for their own benefit and use elections to provide a veneer of democracy.

The political battles raging in states across America are cast as about whether big labor retains its considerable clout.

Republican Governors Scott Walker of Wisconsin and Chris Christie of New Jersey say public employees are fleecing taxpayers, causing fiscal chaos. It’s an inherent conflict, critics contend, for public-employees’ unions to bargain with government officials they helped elect with campaign support.

In a column in Newsweek last week, a former adviser to President George W. Bush charged that the primary purpose of public unions is to “work against” the interests of taxpayers. “Public unions are big money,” the article boldly proclaims. Most of the specifics are directed at unions representing teachers, firefighters and nurses, yet the

America is not broke.
Contrary to what those in power would like you to believe so that you'll give up your pension, cut your wages, and settle for the life your great-grandparents had, America is not broke. Not by a long shot. The country is awash in wealth and cash. It's just that it's not in your hands. Archdiocese of Milwaukee – Statement Regarding the Rights of Workers and the Value of Unions

Most Reverend Jerome E. Listecki, archbishop of Milwaukee and president of the Wisconsin Catholic Conference, has issued the following statement regarding the rights of workers and the value of unions.

February 16, 2011

The Church is well aware that difficult economic times call for hard choices and financial responsibility to further the common good. Our own dioceses and parishes have not been immune to the effects of the current economic difficulties. But hard times do not nullify the moral obligation each of us has to respect the legitimate rights of workers. As Pope Benedict wrote in his 2009 encyclical, Caritas in veritate:

Governments, for reasons of economic utility, often limit the freedom or the negotiating capacity of labor unions. Hence traditional networks of solidarity have more and more obstacles to overcome. The repeated calls issued

Washington DC: Congressional Black Caucus Stands In Solidarity With Wisconsin Workers

Filed under: Scott Walker — millerlf @ 11:05 am

WASHINGTON – Chairman Emanuel Cleaver II, Congresswoman Gwen Moore and the Congressional Black Caucus sent the following letter to Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin in support of workers’ rights. The letter to Governor Walker is attached and text included below. Chairman Cleaver also released the following statement in support:

“Anytime the rights of public workers are being compromised it is our duty to stand with them. For 40 years, the Congressional Black Caucus has worked tirelessly to ensure that all Americans, regardless of race, color or creed have the opportunity to fully pursue and achieve the American dream. Taking away public employees rights to collectively bargain seems like an assault on the pursuit of that dream.

The CBC is committed to responsibly reducing the deficit, but not with indiscriminate cuts that target hard-working American families. The sacrifices that we make as a nation must be distributed equally amongst the population – not on the backs of the public servants.”

- Chairman Emanuel Cleaver, II

Why employee pensions aren't bankrupting states

WASHINGTON — From state legislatures to Congress to tea party rallies, a vocal backlash is rising against what are perceived as too-generous retirement benefits for state and local government workers. However, that widespread perception doesn't match reality.

A close look at state and local pension plans across the nation, and a comparison of them to those in the private sector, reveals a more complicated story. However, the short answer is that there's simply no evidence that state pensions are the current burden to public finances that their critics claim.

Pension contributions from state and local employers aren't blowing up budgets. They amount to just 2.9 percent of state spending, on average, according to the National Association of State Retirement Administrators. The Center for Retiremen

How You Can Boycott the Kochs (List of Their Products)

AlterNet / By Lauren Kelley February 28, 2011

The backlash against the Kochs’ influence in Wisconsin is gaining steam, with labor supporters starting to boycott Koch Industries’ many products (listed below)

Over the past few weeks, the billionaire Koch brothers and their front groups have steadily increased their involvement in Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s efforts to strip state workers of their collective bargaining rights. The Kochs’ outsized wealth and influence are forces to be reckoned with; that’s why we should all be grateful that a Koch backlash, including a boycott of Koch Industries’ products, has started picking up steam.

AlterNet has been keeping a close eye on the Koch-financed support for Walker’s anti-union campaign. As wereported last week, Walker is deep in the pocket of the Kochs, having received some $43,000 from Koch Industries while running for governor in 2010. Once Walker was elected, he made sure to take care of his friends/financiers, giving out massive tax breaks to Koch Industries, and more recently, launching the ongoing effort to quash Wisconsin union workers’ rights.

As AlterNet’s Washington bureau chief Adele Stan puts it, Walker is “carrying out the wishes of his corporate master.” But why are the brothers Koch so interested in stifling labor rights in Wisconsin? For one thing, they
