Several hundred students and others connected with for-profit colleges and trade schools rallied Wednesday at the foot of Capitol Hill to protest a federal proposal to tighten regulation of career-education programs.

"My education, my job, my choice" was their message, in response to a proposal that the Obama administration says would help ensure that students find "gainful employment" and are not overloaded with debt.

The industry says the proposal would wipe out many programs that serve low-income and minority students.

Earlier today, Secretary Duncan and Congressman Fattah headlined a live, national event that celebrated and encouraged the work of GEAR UP projects across the country. GEAR UP is a grant program that assists students in obtaining a secondary school diploma as well as preparing for and succeeding in postsecondary education.

The event was held at Friendship Public Charter School (FPCS) in Washington and included video and audio connections with GEAR UP projects in Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Texas. The event was emceed by FPCS student Trayon Barber,

The event highlighted the work of the Pennsylvania GEAR UP project in the area of academic performance improvement, the North Carolina GEAR UP project’s use of data and the efforts of the Texas GEAR UP project to involve family in efforts to get students through high school and into college.

Secretary Duncan and Congressman Fattah said that they happy to hear that students in these GEAR UP programs were on track to graduate from high school and enroll in college. In particular, Congressman Fattah spoke out in favor of early college efforts that offer high school students the chance to earn college credits while still in high school. Secretary Duncan noted that “without a college education, many doors will be closed to you. With a college education, you can pursue your passion.”

When Secretary Duncan asked the students at FPCS if they planned to go to college, they all raised their hands.

K-12 Education on the Marquee is an excellent post by Walt Gardner on the common errors being made in documentaries about schools.

My only issue with it is that he suggests that parents of English Language Learners might not respond to requests to meet with teachers. Mayor Michael Bloomberg personally asked to yank the former "sex worker"-turned-teacher from her elementary school classroom last week, he said.

Bloomberg also said the city is investigating its "legal rights" regarding Bronx art teacher Melissa Petro, stopping short of saying she would immediately be fired.

NEW YORK—As the NBC News crew packed away the remaining equipment from their Education Nation Summit in Rockefeller Plaza Tuesday evening, a group of about 20 teachers and parents gathered in a light drizzle to say that their views were not represented in the summit.

The group claimed that the summit gave undue prominence to privatization of the public school system, being heavily influenced by corporate cosponsors.

"NBC has disinvited prominent experts from its panels, including Diane Ravitch and Yong Zhao of Michigan State, and has given up any pretense of providing a fair presentation of views. The vast majority of panelists have been recipients of funding from Education Nation's cosponsors, the Gates and Broad Foundations," claimed
