Sacramento County schools continue to suspend black students at disproportionate rates

More black students were suspended last school year in Sacramento County than any other ethnic group, even though there are more local white, Asian and Hispanic students in local schools, according to new state data.
Roughly 20 percent of the county's black students were suspended last year, higher than the statewide rate of 15 percent. By comparison, 8 percent of the county's Hispanics, 7 percent of whites and 3 percent of Asians were suspended.
The figures represent a continuation of a long-term disparity. Several education researchers recently expressed dismay over the trend, noting that suspended students often fall behind in their education.
