All Things Education: TFA comes to RVA

All Things Education: TFA comes to RVA:

TFA comes to RVA

With a vote of 5-2 (with two members absent) the Richmond School Board has decided to contract with Teach for America to hire up to 30 teachers. I've already written in great detail about how the Teach for America model is problematic here and then here and about why TFA is not right for the K-12 public school students of Virginia here, so I won't repeat what I said there.

In the meantime, here is the reporting out of RPS leadership:

“It’s another tool in our recruitment tool box,” said Kristen Larson, 4th District, who voted in favor of the program during a School Board work session Monday. “We know we have a hard time hiring, and we need to look at all paths.”
In Richmond, they will fill as-yet-determined hard-to-staff positions.
The school system typically has to fill 200 to 300 teacher positions a year, but in recent years it has had a hard time finding enough qualified candidates. This school year began with about three dozen positions open. Some have been filled by long-term substitutes while others remain unfilled.
“We have a lot of work to do in how we attract and retain teachers,” said School Board Chairman Jeffrey Bourne, 3rd District. “Teach for America is injecting some creativity and some new thinking into the hiring process.
“I don’t think this is an ‘either/or’ situation. It’s an all of the above. There’s room here for different approaches.”

This is very disappointing, especially after the RPS School Board has seemed to be on the right track in so many other ways. They are trying to strengthen and diversify opportunities for Richmond children while staying under the umbrella of the public, democratic system and while involving leaders with expertise in education. Unfortunately, in this case a majority of the School Board has decided come out from under the umbrella and fork over $150,000 ($5,000 per corps member = $150,000) to TFA to hire inexperienced and untrained people to be teachers.

However, this is not surprising since TFA's chief lobbyist in Richmond has been diligently working the RPS School Boardas well as Governor McDonnell's administration for quite a while. Furthermore, at least one School Board member in particular has been eager to hire TFA. And I don't live in Richmond proper and can't say how many residents have

Tuesday's elections disastrous for inBloom: Seven states out, two to go

Big News from Jefferson County, the only inBloom pilot district in Colorado. Anti-inBloom candidates swept the school board elections on Tuesday night, on Thursday their Superintendent resigned, and the existing school board unanimously voted to scrap inBloom. The school board president, Leslee Dahlkemper, was quoted as saying,  "We decided that it was important to listen to the community."   Congrats to the parents of Jefferson County, and especially activist Rachael Stickland who led the fight! SeeColumbine Courier, Colorado News, Michelle Malkin’s column , Politico and EdWeek
Now, only two states remain from the nine original inBloom “partners”: New York and Illinois.
In Illinois, parent coalition More than a Score, along with the Chicago Teachers Union, have just begun the fight. The Illinois Federation of Teachers passed a resolution against sharing any personal student data to vendors without consent, and I am going to speak at apublic forum on inBloom in Chicago on November 21.
Here in New York, we are gaining strength every day.  On Tuesday, New Yorkers elected Bill de Blasio as Mayor by a huge margin.  De Blasio is already on record against inBloom, having written a letter last spring to the State Education Department and the NYC DOE opposing this, repeating his opposition this fall, and vowing to pull student data out of the inBloom cloud as soon as possible.
District leaders and schoolboards throughout the state are speaking out in protest, turning back Race to the Top funds,  and refusing

Put to the Test: Adults Sample Common Core

Few of us had heard of Common Core before New York State adopted the controversial standards last year. The standards developed by business and education leaders are intended to help U.S. students compete in a global economy and create continuity among districts and grade levels. More than 40 states have adopted the standards, for which they're rewarded with Race to the Top federal funds.

Fewer than one-third of the state's students met the standards during the first round of Common Core-based tests last spring.

Amid all of the debate, there is some confusion about Common Core.

"I guess I don't know ultimately what is expected of (students)," said Stephanie Lewis, a parent of three children in Rush-Henrietta. "All I hear is the ultimate end goal of college prep that starts in preschool."

News 8 gathered a group of parents, along with Greece Assistant Superintendent Shaun Nelms and University of Rochester psychologist Richard Ryan to discuss Common Core and its impact on education.

We started our session by taking several Common Core-based state questions. These questions appeared on state exams. The state does not make entire tests available.

Our first question was from third grade English Language Arts. Students had to read an essay about a boy fishing with
