Students in the Southland may have a hard time lining up summers with their friends, as schools begin the 2012 academic year with extremely lop-sided instructional calendars. The administrators of some districts have cut instructional days in the school year in order to close funding deficits.
In June, LAUSD’s school board cut five instructional days from the 180-day instructional year. Superintendent John Deasy alluded to this in a back-to-school assembly last week at Washington Preparatory High School.
"I am very aware of challenges we face and they’re daunting," he said. "They’re huge, scary and seemingly impossible."
But in spite of "seemingly impossible" challenges, he urged students, teachers and administrators to continue

Mind Your Manners and Your Language

This is a site for discussing better education for all.
You know that.
And you know that I won’t permit comments that are blatantly offensive.
I am the judge of what is offensive.
It seems that one of my posts, in which a teacher asked whether parents were always the best judge of what is best for their children, got published on a home-schooling website. I don’t know which site it was, but for hours I have been receiving offensive comments. Some describe teachers as perverts. Some curse teachers for daring to think that they ever know better than any parent. Some curse public education in vile terms.
I have deleted almost all of them because of the level of abusiveness and scurrilousness.
They can continue ranting on their website. Not here.
If anyone wants to disagree with anything printed here, welcome.
But mind your manners and your language.

On The Taking of A Mile
What.....
.....Really?

I'm supposed to be getting ready for bed.... but after reading this letter by the great Ken Previti over at the Mothership, I'm too agitated.

Ken makes the point that the history of pension systems is full of examples of miles being taken after inches were conceded. In fact, it's the conceding of the inches that appears to green light court rulings in favor of pension-raids that should have been plainly illegal.

He's recommending a terrific book called Retirement Heist by Ellen E. Shultz. I read some of the Google version of this book, and I'm going to order it from my local retailer.

It reminds me of the moment back in April when Ty Fahner said the thing you'll never see on the Illinois Is Broke Twitter feed. Remember this?

Our Children: Arrested Developments

Yesterday, Think Progress reported that administration in Meridian, MS sent children (predominantly special needs and / or Black) to prison for infractions as small as dress code violations. Read:
After months of investigation into claims of such a pipeline, the Justice Department released Friday a definitive letter revealing that the Meridian Police Department “automatically arrests all students referred to MPD by the District. The children arrested by MPD are then sent to the County juvenile justice system”:
“The system established by the City of Meridian, Lauderdale County, and DYS to incarcerate children for school suspensions ‘shocks the conscience,’ resulting in the incarceration of children

Who Makes the Rules in a Classroom? Seven Ideas about Rule-making.

A couple of years ago, I was working as lead facilitator in an e-mentoring program for new teachers. Several recognized teachers from around the nation were contributing their very best "first days" advice for novice teachers--how to set up a classroom for success, selecting activities for the first week of school, common crises, etc. I asked the teachers about classroom rules and their thinking was unanimous: Good teachers assemble their students and, using a self-governing process, collectively write their own classroom rules.
Uh-oh.
I pressed on the concept: What made collaborative rule-creation more effective in building a smoothly functioning

GOP House leader to state school chief on charter stand: “Were you lying then or are you lying now?”

In talking today to my colleagues who cover politics, several felt State Schools Superintendent John Barge would pay a steep political price for his decision to oppose the Nov. 6th amendment that would recreate a state commission to approve charter schools.
One noted that Gov. Nathan Deal carries grudges for a long, long time. The Charter Schools Commission was shuttered after the Supreme Court ruled that it was unconstitutional. The GOP leadership quickly responded with a constitutional amendment that voters will judge in the fall.
Barge opposes a change to the state constitution reviving the appointed commission. He contends that the state Board of Education can already approve charters and does approve

Modern School: Rocketship’s National Plan to Jettison Teachers: Rocketship’s National Plan to Jettison Teachers by Michael Dunn If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is not true. This common sense adage ought to prevent intelligent people from falling for costly scams. Yet otherwise smart people continue to get suckered at an alarming rate. This is particularly true in politics and education “reform,” where people seem to prefer the fantasy of a quick, magic bullet “fix” to social problems, than having to do a little research or critical analysis to determine if the propos... more »

Many charter schools also ignore seniority and hire predominantly young, malleable and lower waged novices. These are just some of the labor cost cutting strategie... more »

Stop Your Whining | Taking Note: Stop Your Whining by John Merrow *“The college graduates we hire can’t even write a clear paragraph.”* *“Kids today don’t read.”* *“The freshmen coming onto campus today don’t know how to express themselves. They’re inarticulate.”* I hear at least one of those complaints — and sometimes *all three* — at every public appearance I make. These adults are saying that young people today can’t write, can’t speak, and don’t read. A few of the complainers blame technology, but eventually most point fingers at teachers and the schools. I used to just listen —... more »

Parent Trigger And Why We Need To Talk [Let's Be A Solution] | The Jose Vilson: Parent Trigger And Why We Need To Talk [Let's Be A Solution] by Jose I rarely get the opportunity to have my opinion come in direct conflict with an outstanding actress of any repute, so excuse me if I brag via quote today. The following excerpt was published in the independent media outlet *In These Times*, written by Josh Eidelson: Vilson says he was particularly disappointed by Viola Davis’ participation, given *The Help* star’s past comments about wanting to elevate the voices of often-ignored dome... more »

Five Ways Privatization Degrades America | NationofChange: *Five Ways Privatization Degrades America* * * * * A grand delusion has been planted in the minds of Americans, that privately run systems are more efficient and less costly than those in the public sector.
