Is Lucy Calkins Legally Insane? southbronxschool.com

Is Lucy Calkins Legally Insane?

We have called for the arrest and prosecution of Lucy Calkins. We have sampled the child abuse of Lucy Calkins methods. We have called for all administrators that buy into Lucy Calkins to be terminated post haste. And we have pulled back the sheath of the Cult of Lucy Calkins.

The sign of insanity is doing what results in failure over and over again and hoping for a different outcome. Apparently if any administrator that relies on anything from Lucy Calkins to improve the reading and writing skills of the students in the charge must be legally insane.

Therefore we hear at SBSB feel it is incumbent on ourselves to advocate, nay, call for, any administrator that believe that after years of failure of the Calkins

Ed groups still want Brown funding formula debated outside budget
By Kimberly Beltran

While broad consensus from the K-12 community for Gov. Jerry Brown’s new school financing proposal emerged Thursday during a Senate panel hearing, district administrators and lawmakers said they still want to see it developed through legislative education policy debate – not carried as part of the governor’s budget bill.
Brown’s refusal to budge on that point last year led to the plan going nowhere but, as promised then, the governor reintroduced his Local Control Funding Formula as part of his 2013-14 budget proposal, unveiled in January.
“I agree with you, this bill doesn’t belong in a trailer bill,” said Sen. Roderick Wright, D-Los Angeles, echoing the concerns of several district superintendents asked to address the panel. “This has to be something that’s much more greatly expanded so that all of the issues come into account.”
Thursday’s review of the plan by the Senate’s budget committee – the first public vetting of Brown’s latest attempt to simplify and balance the state’s antiquated school funding system – revealed widespread support among education leaders and advocates for the basic tenet of the plan: to create equity across schools by providing a per-pupil base grant to be used at local administrators’ discretion, and supplementing that general allocation with extra money for

A. Phillip Randolph and Who Really Controls Teacher Voice

A Phillip Randolph
A Phillip Randolph
This week, I had the distinct please of listening to Norman Hill speak as part of a panel of activists and organizers that worked on and around the Civil Rights Movement, specifically with Bayard Rustin. In one of my favorite moments, Hill quoted A. Phillip Randolph:
“At the banquet table of nature, there are no reserved seats. You get what you can take, and you keep what you can hold. If you can’t take anything, you won’t get anything, and if you can’t hold anything, you won’t keep anything. And you can’t take anything without organization.”

I’m reminded of this every time we talk about teacher voice, and getting an invitation to this imaginary table.

TNValleyNow - Alabama school flex bill with tax credits passes

REALLY?

(AP) — Republican legislators on Thursday expanded a routine education bill to include tax credits for parents who move their children from failing public schools to private schools, prompting the state school superintendent to withdraw his support and a teachers' group to assail it as "totally anti-public education."
The revised version cleared the House and Senate, with Republicans voting for it and Democrats opposing it in unusually heated debate. Republican Gov. Robert Bentley said he would sign it into law, but state Superintendent of Education Tommy Bice dropped his support.
Initially, the bill was to allow city and county school systems to get approval from the state's school superintendent and school board

Fox Guarding Hen House: Mexican Govt Busts Teachers’ Union for Corruption

Malos maestros - escuelas deficientes estilo mexicano?

The head of the Mexican teachers' union (SNTE), Elba Esther Gordillo, has been arrested for embezzling over $156 million from union funds, according to a recent BBC report. Gordillo allegedly used the funds to purchase private property, private planes and plastic surgery.

If the allegations are true (and there is considerable evidence that they are), this would be an enormous amount of money stolen from the teachers, who earn less than $20,000 per year, on average. However, the prosecution of Gordillo probably has little to do with concern for the plight of the average Mexican teacher, for whom the ruling elite have little compassion (except possibly a few crocodile tears during election time). Rather, it is a strategic move meant to neutralize an individual and an organization that have stood in the way of private financial gain.

Gordillo has been an outspoken critic of the government’s free market reform agenda, thus slowing (ever so slightly) the juggernaut of privatization occurring in Mexico, as in public education systems throughout the world. While Gordillo, like her colleagues in the U.S. and

Is it fear of the darkness that dims our mind or is it the dim of our mind that is dark and damning? No one can be sure; however we can see what occurs and ask why. Why might Americans systematically deny rights to people of color? Why might the young, the most vulnerable among us, be victims of prey? Indeed, why do we prejudge people at all and why is it that even the elderly cannot escape our diabolical doings? The theories abound; answers escape us. Nevertheless, the veracity is our truth. The right to learn and the right to vote are denied.

We close their schools, deny them an equal and equitable education, and in 2013 we may ultimately rescind the voting rights of the few. In January of this year, the Journey For Justice 2 Alliance met with officials in Washington, District of Columbia, to discuss the topic, education policies that discriminate. Today, on February 27, 2013, just down the lane from the Department of Education hearing, another inquiry was held. The Supreme Court heard the case, Shelby County, Alabama v. Holder. On the face of it, the argument may seem separate

It was a wondrous thing coming in from the trailers to a classroom full of computers, something I'd rarely seen. The kids were mostly doing something or other on them, and I mostly let them do it. One boy kept listening to music on his iPod. I asked him to put it away, and he did. I carried on, doing whatever I was doing, while the kids carried on doing whatever they were doing. Please Don’t Call Me Coach | Taking Note: Please Don’t Call Me Coach by John Merrow If I were still teaching, I don’t think I would want people calling me “Coach.” Referring to teachers as Coaches has been in vogue for the last dozen years or so. Instead of being “Sages on the Stage,” teachers became “Guides on the Side.” Better yet, they were “Coaches” who brought out the best in their students. “Coach” was understood to be a high compliment, a term of great respect. It carried the message that this particular teacher understood individual differences among his or her students a... more »

Seattle Schools Community Forum: One More Reason to Wonder about Tom: One More Reason to Wonder about Tom by Melissa Westbrook From The Stranger Slog (with the headline "Rodney Tom Hates Teachers"): *With zero notice Sunday, just one day before it was heard by the Ways & Means Committee, millionaire state Senate Majority "Leader" Rodney Tom (R-Medina) filed a bill that would eliminate defined pension benefits for most state and public school employees, replacing them with a risky 401-K-style savings plan that would subject future retirees to the whims of the market. Unions and charters are strange bedfellows | Gary Rubinstein's Blog: Unions and charters are strange bedfellows by Gary Rubinstein When you ask the leader of an allegedly high performing charter school what makes them so successful, they generally say that they have more flexibility with hiring and firing since they are free from pesky union contracts. This is why I found it quite odd that I received an announcement with job openings at a charter school called Green Dot High School the other day from the New York City teacher’s union, called the UFT. It turns out that some charte... more »

Zimmer Irate Over Reform Coalition Attacks - LA School Report: Zimmer Irate Over Reform Coalition Attacks by Hillel Aron Zimmer, Villaraigosa, and Sullivan It was perhaps no surprise that District 4 School Board member *Steve Zimmer * was visibly upset when he happened to run into Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s Deputy Mayor for Education, Joan Sullivan, at today’s United Way education event. “RFK, Joan? NYC Educator: My Filmmaking Career

NYC Educator: My Filmmaking Career: My Filmmaking Career by NYC Educator This year, I was asked to do a project with my kids. I chose to have them make films, with the cooperation of MyBlock NYC, which I highly recommend. I made a short video introducing my block as that my school was on, and introduced the students to people in the building I thought could help them. I then told them to make their own videos, and let some of them borrow the ancient flip cameras our school owns. I thought it would be easy. I edited my video on a Mac using iMovie, never having used it before, and f... more »
