Hispanic college success: It's all in the family
RIVERSIDE, Calif.—When Roberto Rodriguez arrived at the University of California campus here four years ago, he felt the emotional tug home so many other Hispanic first-generation college students talk about.
Three years and some bumps later, with graduation within reach, Roberto's father suffered a heart attack and was diagnosed with diabetes -- the kind of family crisis capable of derailing any college career.
But instead of becoming a dropout statistic, Rodriguez will graduate with honors this month from UC-Riverside, where graduation rate gaps that separate Hispanic students from their peers on a national level simply do not exist.

After wrapping up her freshman year of high school this month, Schmidt will travel to Guatemala with her family to help build a house through Habitat for Humanity.On a tidy shelf in a bright turquoise bedroom in Southwest Portland sits a framed certificate from the Cambodian Ministry of Education. It is written in Khmer, the official language of the Southeast Asian nation, except for a name: Christina Schmidt. The document, essentially a fancy thank-you note, was presented to the 15-year-old last winter in a tiny village about a day's drive northwest of Phnom Penh after she helped raise more than $16,000 to build a secondary school in the impoverished country.
"I feel like it's part of my duty to give back and to help others who aren't as lucky as I've been," Schmidt said.
Now, as she wraps up her freshman year at Lincoln High School, the teen with a passion for nonprofit work and a knack for raising money is preparing for her next project: a family Habitat for Humanity trip to Guatemala. She and her 13-year-old brother, Andrew, have raised $2,000 to put toward construction supplies. They will donate their time to build a house with the family that will live in it.

It comes as no surprise that the anti-union Sacramento Bee would use Elk Grove's tentative agreement to attack the Sacramento City Teachers Association ("Elk Grove teachers union puts kids first," editorial, May 21.) We in the Elk Grove Education Association reject this backhanded comparison as little more than a cheap shot at SCTA. The editorial, in its zeal to strike at the Sacramento teachers' union, neglected to note the far different set of circumstances facing our two associations.
First of all, the Elk Grove teachers' contract runs through June 2010 while the Sacramento teachers' contract extends further into the future. It takes two parties to sign an agreement to make it valid. The onus is not on the teachers'

A teacher at Aisha Shule/W.E.B. DuBois Preparatory Academy has been removed from duty pending an investigation into whether he improperly restrained one of two students who got into a fight on a school playground last week.
Teachers separated the students, but one, a fifth-grader, was inconsolable and went after the other student again, said Hasina Murphy, deputy director of Aisha Shule/W.E.B. DuBois, a public school academy with 250 K-12 students on Detroit's west side.

Authorities made no progress in the search for Kyron, which was suspended overnight but is resuming today with a 2-square-mile grid search. The massive effort to find the second-grader involves four county sheriff's departments, the Portland Police Bureau and a large number of federal agents with the FBI. So far, the search hasn't turned up any clues about the child's whereabouts.
Families and students will be interviewed at the school by a team of 50 detectives from agencies across the region today, starting at 10 a.m. and continuing through the afternoon.
Authorities plan to brief the public later this morning about the status of the search.
