THE FIRST PODCASTER WAS A FASCIST PRIEST — MEET HIS GRANDCHILDREN

History doesn't repeat itself, but it does recycle its garbage.

Before Joe Rogan, before Tucker Carlson, before whatever rage-bro is currently screaming into a microphone in his garage about "the globalists" — there was Father Charles Coughlin. And if you think today's hate-pod ecosystem is some alarming new phenomenon, allow me to introduce you to its great-grandfather.

Coughlin was, in every meaningful sense, the world's first podcaster. He had the reach (30 million weekly listeners at his peak — a number that would make any Spotify executive weep with envy), the parasocial intimacy (families gathered around their radios like they were sitting in his living room), the merchandising (a weekly magazine called Social Justice), and most importantly — the unhinged, conspiratorial, antisemitic content that today's algorithm would cheerfully amplify straight to your recommended feed.

Broadcasting from the Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak, Michigan, Father Coughlin started out innocuously enough — gentle Sunday sermons, nice priest stuff. But by the mid-1930s, the Great Depression had given him an audience hungry for villains, and Coughlin was delighted to supply them.

International bankers. Wall Street manipulation. The "Jewish-Communist" conspiracy. If you've spent five minutes in the darker corners of YouTube or Rumble recently, you're already familiar with the playlist. Coughlin didn't invent these tropes — that's the thing about recycled garbage, someone else took out the can first — but he industrialized them for mass consumption, reaching into American living rooms with a voice that sounded reasonable, even pastoral, right up until it wasn't.

He defended the Nazi pogrom of Kristallnacht on the air. His magazine serialized The Protocols of the Elders of Zion — a hoax so thoroughly debunked it practically has its own Wikipedia disambiguation page — as if it were serious journalism. He inspired the Christian Front, a street-level movement whose members in New York and Boston turned his radio rhetoric into real-world harassment, boycotts, and physical assaults on Jewish citizens.

Sound familiar? It should.

The names have changed. The dog-whistle vocabulary has been updated (though "America First" — Coughlin's phrase, not coincidentally — has made a vigorous comeback). The microphone has been replaced with a ring light and a podcast interface. But the architecture of the hate is the same: find your scapegoat, wrap it in the language of populism and patriotism, and broadcast it to an audience that's frightened, angry, and ready to believe the worst about their neighbors.

Nick Fuentes runs a show called America First. Candace Owens left The Daily Wire and immediately found her lane in the anti-Jewish conspiracy lane. Tucker Carlson, having been set loose from Fox News, now operates as an independent pod-lord casually platforming figures like Fuentes without so much as a raised eyebrow. And further into the fever swamp, outfits like The Daily Shoah and The Right Stuff do what Coughlin did — only without the Roman collar to provide any veneer of respectability.

To be clear: this is not exclusively a right-wing phenomenon, though the right-wing version is louder, more organized, and more directly tethered to political power at the moment. The left has its own antisemitism problem — where "anti-Zionism" frequently serves as a thin wrapper for tropes that predate the State of Israel by centuries. The tactic of swapping "Zionist" for "Jew" in classic conspiracy frameworks isn't political critique; it's a rebrand. Watchdog groups across the spectrum have documented the pattern. Antisemitism does not check your voter registration before it takes root.

But Coughlin's story offers something more than a warning — it offers a precedent for what can actually be done.

The Roosevelt administration didn't wring its hands. The National Association of Broadcasters tightened its code. Radio stations stopped buying his syndication. The federal government revoked his magazine's mailing privileges under the Espionage Act when the U.S. entered the war. And Archbishop Edward Mooney of Detroit delivered the ecclesiastical equivalent of a pink slip: stop, or be defrocked. Coughlin, faced with the actual consequences of his rhetoric, complied. He returned to parish life, and America heard very little from him again.

He wasn't martyred. He wasn't silenced by a shadowy cabal. He was held accountable by institutions that chose to act.

The lesson isn't that we need the federal government to police speech — that road has its own hazards. The lesson is that platforms, broadcasters, advertisers, and institutions make choices. They chose to carry Coughlin until they chose not to. They can make the same choice today. Hate speech has never needed a microphone. Giving it one is always a decision.

Father Coughlin died in 1979, a quiet, forgotten parish priest. He left behind a dark legacy as the proof-of-concept for using mass communication to mainstream bigotry — and a blueprint that his ideological grandchildren are following, chapter and verse, in 2026.

We've ended this before. We can end it again.

We can only hope.
