PATERSON — School 12 students busily learned about fractions, division, multiplication and triangles in a school resource room — on a Saturday.

Once a month, a group of third- through fifth-graders at the school participates in the Math Academy, a two-hour program designed to reinforce and expand their math skills.
The creator of the program, which kicked off in October, is Bergen County Academies junior Bradley Frizzell, who wanted to do something service-oriented and share his interest in math and engineering with younger students in a fun, active way.
Frizzell, 16, of Glen Rock, learned about School 12 from a neighbor who serves as a professor in residence there and who was looking for new student programs. He pitched the idea to Principal Hector Montes, who agreed to it.
