If I had to choose one individual for the title of Most Polarizing Educationist, that person would certainly be Michelle Rhee.
(You know– educationist– the genuine article, like the Rolexx watch or Louis Wuitton handbag.)
Though Rhee has received much press in venues including Time, the  Harvard Political Review, the Washington Postand the New York Times for being “polarizing,” the problem with being polarizing is that those with influence might like to read about you and talk about you, but because they are mindful of their own career climbing (as many educationists and politicians tend to be), they won’t want to be closely identified with you.
Sure, in your only year as the single teacher in the classroom, you might tape children’s mouths and cause them to bleed– and later joke about it to a group of first-year teachers– and never be called to answer for such behavior. Or, you couldstart your own Teach for America-styled nonprofit and be catapulted into the spotlight as– of all things– a chancellor of schools. But then, things become more complicated as you deliver on your No Excuses, Fire the Teachers Who Don’t Deliver Pre-determined Test Score Gains in a manner that warrants criminal investigation– and no serious investigation happens, even years laterAnd you might even follow-up that “polarizing” stint as chancellor by starting your second nonprofitand brag that it will raise one billion dollars in its first year.

By now there have been thousands of tributes to Robin Williams. We knew he was an amazingly sensitive actor, and his comedic genius, my guess, will never be duplicated. I believe, like others, that Williams had a special gift with his hyper ability to string one-liners off without, it seemed, much prior thought.
Williams loved children and young people. His compassion was obvious in both his acting roles and his charitable causes. Movies like Good Will Hunting and the Dead Poets Society especially related to young adults and teens and dealt with student difficulties, the beauty of learning and finding your calling.
So my tribute to Robin Williams is to write about the seriousness of mental illness in both children and teens and how it relates to their schooling. According to the CDC, every year, approximately 2 million U.S. adolescents attempt suicide. Even very young children can struggle with emotional difficulties.
Our public schools should be doing more to address mental illness in both children and teens.
Unfortunately, the corporate takeover of public schools and the attempts to convert schools into simplistic, one-size-fits-all factory learning (preferably with every student online), leaves little room for the complexities children and teens bring to school when it comes to mental health.
Who is paying attention? Consideration of these problems is usually reactive.
Until there is a school shooting, a suicide, a bullying incident, or a student is arrested for outlandish behavior, and these days that can include very young exasperated Robin Williams and Lessons to Be Learned About Kids with Mental Illness in Public Schools:

 Former Washington, D.C., schools chancellor Michelle Rhee has told people close to her that she is preparing to step down as CEO of StudentsFirst, the advocacy organization she created after leaving her chancellor post, according to three sources close to the organization.

Rhee is expected to remain active on StudentsFirst's board after she steps down, likely by the end of this year. The sources requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss details of Rhee's move.
Francisco Castillo, spokesman for StudentsFirst, said in a statement to The Huffington Post: "Michelle remains fully committed to education reform and leading StudentsFirst." He declined to elaborate.
StudentsFirst is preparing to hire a new president to help manage the organization's day-to-day functions, a staffer told HuffPost. "The organization is near the finish line with a viable candidate and hope to be in a position to announce it very soon," said the staffer, who declined to be named because they were not authorized to speak about the process.
As Washington's schools chief, Rhee's rhetoric about firing bad teachers angered many. But she also rose to national prominence with network television appearances and, most notoriously, a Time magazine cover depicting her holding a broom -- ostensibly for sweeping away the worst teachers.
In recent months, as local media have reported that StudentsFirst is winding down activities in at least four states, Rhee has taken on other jobs. It was recently reported that she would become board chair of St. Hope Public Schools, a charter school chain run by her husband, Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson (D). (Rhee recently changed her name to Johnson, but she is continuing to use Rhee professionally.) This week, Scotts Miracle-Gro Co. announced Rhee would join the company's board.
"She's been really brutally attacked personally, and StudentsFirst has not been as effective as she wanted," said a former prominent StudentsFirst staffer, who declined to be named, wanting to preserve relationships in education reform. "It's been frustrating. It's not totally shocking that eventually even she would decide to step away."
If Rhee steps aside, the organization would be without its main attraction. StudentsFirst has recently pulled out of states such as Minnesota and Florida, and its relationship with a New Jersey partner organization ended about a year ago. It's unclear whether StudentsFirst will draw as much attention without its famous founder.
"In practice, this has always been about Michelle," said the former staffer. Opponents of the Common Core State Standards have made their opinions heard far and wide – they don't like the standards, and they'll say why you as a teacher, parent or lawmaker shouldn't either. They're so passionate about it, in fact, that they made strides to take over a social media campaign aimed at gaining traction for supporters on Tuesday.
Common Core opponents gained more time in the spotlight – and perhaps an upper hand – recently when Glenn Beck and Michelle Malkin held a town hall meeting simulcast in hundreds of movie theaters last month. The "We Will Not Conform" strategy session characterized the standards as a move away from local control of public education.
Supporters' attempts to quell concerns, on the other hand, have catered largely to the more calculated reasoning of policy wonks than the emotional connection parents and teachers have with what goes on in the classroom, some say. In a recent interview with "Bloomberg EDU" host Jane Stoddard Williams, College Board President David Coleman – an architect of the standards – said supporters will "lose things of great importance" if they dismiss opposition to Common Core as "an extremist position."
Following the intensified media push from opponents, backers of Common Core began to ratchet up their efforts to bring awareness to the other side of the debate.
Organized by the Collaborative for Student Success and supported by other groups like Teach Plus and Educators 4 Excellence, teachers and other Common Core supporters took to Twitter Tuesday to launch an outreach strategy encouraging teachers, parents and other leaders to voice why they are Common Core Opponents Hijack Supporters' Twitter Blitz - US News:
