California’s senior senator, Dianne Feinstein, didn’t mince words “Stop deporting farmworkers” or you risk crippling the country’s food supply and devastating the agricultural industry. Senator Feinstein has asked Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) authorities to stop deporting undocumented agricultural farmworkers much the same way ICE has stopped deported undocumented youth. Her plea com

Michelle Rhee’s StudentsFirst group is holding a “Teacher Town Hall” meeting in Los Angeles on September 5, 2013, as part of a multi-city tour. I can’t fathom why anyone would be excited. As a Californian (since 1990), as an Angeleno (since roughly 2001), and as the parent of a public school-attending fourth grader, I’m hard ...read moreThe post Michelle Rhee Comes to Los Angeles; The City Shrugs

The 2013-14 school year begins in a few days for the students of the Philadelphia School District. But we can be certain that this school year will be a far cry from what we imagine school to be. Over 100 principals in New York City are not trusted by their staff, according to the Learning Environment Survey results for 2012-13, released earlier today. I don’t place much stock in the surveys as a whole – but when half the staff says “I don’t trust you” something’s going on. We’ll look at other questions, and more details, later, and always with a grain of salt. Which district has the least

Maine Governor Signs Executive Order Protecting Local Control, Student Privacy
Governor Paul LePage (R-ME) signed an executive order that affirmed Maine’s commitment to local control and student privacy rights. It doesn’t back Maine out of the Common Core State Standards, but it is a HUGE step and other governors should be doing the same. Citizens in that state will still have the opportunity to vote them out at the ballot box. Here is Governor LePage’s executive order:AN O

Gulen Charter Schools - Gulen charter schools

What is a Gulen charter school?
A Gulen charter school is a publicly-funded charter school that was founded and is run by individuals who are secretly followers of a Turkish imam named Fethullah Gulen. Gulen's followers are called Gulenists, and collectively they form a worldwide covert network called the Gulen Movement. The key defining feature of Gulen charter schools is that control of the schools' policies and (most importantly) finances lies entirely in the hands of Gulenists. This allows the Gulenists to use the schools in ways that further the Gulen Movement's goals. The infiltration of the Gulen Movement into our publicly-funded education system has been made possible by a perfect storm of very lax charter school regulation; the current political climate favoring expansion of charter schools; the Gulenists' unparalleled skills at marketing, deception, and intimidation; the presence of influential sympathizers in our government and in academia; and an extreme reluctance on the part of many journalists, academicians and government officials to involve themselves in this issue for fear they might be labeled as Islamophobic or xenophobic.
Where are the Gulen charter schools, and how many are there?
The list of names of Gulen charter schools currently in operation in the US is given hereat our companion site, which is about the Gulen Movement. Another blogger is also

Reflections on Amplify’s Common Knowledge Profit Potential | deutsch29:
In this post, I would like to offer my response to this information included as part of Diane Ravitch’s post on my exchange with Common Knowledge (CK) founder E.D. Hirsch. Regarding my strong statements on Amplify’s profit motive, Hirsch writes the following:
The only way Amplify can make money from CK Pre-K-through 3 is if a school or district doesn’t want to bother with printing, and therefore orders from them. But this also means that Amplify would need to offer the materials at an attractive price.
And there’s another twist you could not have known about. We were pretty good bargainers on behalf of the public in this deal. Amplify helped pay for the development of grade 3. But we insisted grade 3 also got put up for free.
You need to consult with Amplify where they expect to make money from all this. They are underwriting the development costs of grades 4 and 5, and our contract with them is a regular 20 year publisher’s contract with royalties to CKF. They probably hope that having the whole pre-K 5 package, with pre-k 3 available for free will make 4 and 5 attractive. You’ll have to ask them. Our view is: we want the get these
