Interested in vaccination rates at your child’s school? Want to see how vaccination rates vary between charter, private and public schools throughout California? Check out the EdSource vaccination data app.
In her 33 years as a school nurse, Robyn Ettl has listened, sometimes quietly, sometimes not, to parents in rural Nevada County explain why their children don’t need vaccinations against contagious and potentially fatal diseases, including polio, diphtheria, measles and pertussis.
Now, with nearly a half a million 5-year-olds and soon-to-be-5-year-olds registering for kindergarten in the fall, school nurses like Ettl are more invested than ever in a delicate task: trying to change the minds of parents intent on opting out of school-entrance immunizations.
Under a state law that took effect Jan. 1, parents are required to consult with a health practitioner – doctor, naturopath or credentialed school nurse – before they’re allowed to obtain a personal-belief exemption from their child’s required immunizations. Prior to the legal change, parents could receive an exemption by stopping by the school secretary’s desk and signing the back of their child’s blue immunization card.
Nowhere is the impact of the law, Assembly Bill 2109, more anticipated than in Nevada County, a

Disparity sure to become fuel in ongoing education debate

As it continues to modify strict disciplinary policies in an effort to keep students in the classroom, Chicago Public Schools on Tuesday released data showing privately run charter schools expel students at a vastly higher rate than the rest of the district.
The data reveal that during the last school year, 307 students were kicked out of charter schools, which have a total enrollment of about 50,000. In district-run schools, there were 182 kids expelled out of a student body of more than 353,000.
That means charters expelled 61 of every 10,000 students while the district-run schools expelled just 5 of every 10,000 students.
It's the first time the district has released student suspension data for every school and also the first time it has released data on expulsions for charters. For charter critics, the numbers will buttress long-standing complaints that the privately run operations push out troubled students, allowing their schools to record stronger academic performances.
CPS chief Barbara Byrd-Bennett acknowledged the figures will become additional fuel in the ongoing debate over charters in the city.
"I think there's been a lot of supposition and conversation about what and how the charter success is measured, whether they throw kids out or they keep kids in," Byrd-Bennett said. "I think having the data is going to now lead to productive conversations."
Andrew Broy, president of the Illinois Network of Charter Schools, noted that the data show several charter schools do not have high expulsion rates, and discounted the argument that charters use discipline to improve their academic record.
"There's some above and some below the district average," Broy said. "You can't make the

Another Lawsuit in Tennessee

As per Diane Ravitch’s blog, “The Tennessee Education Association filed a second lawsuit against the use if value-added assessment (called TVAAS in Tennessee), this time including extremist Governor Haslam and ex-TFA state commissioner Huffman in their suit.

As per a more detailed post about this lawsuit, “The state’s largest association for teachers filed a second lawsuit on behalf of a Knox County teacher, calling the use of the Tennessee Value-Added Assessment System (TVAAS), which uses students’ growth on state assessments to evaluate teachers, unconstitutional.
Farragut Middle School eighth grade science teacher Mark Taylor believes he was unfairly denied a bonus after his value-added estimate was based on the standardized test scores of 22 of his 142 students. “Mr. Taylor teaches four upper-level physical science courses and one regular eighth grade science class,” said Richard Colbert, TEA general counsel, in a press release. “The students in the upper-level course take a locally developed end-of-course test in place of the state’s TCAP assessment. As a result, those high-performing students were not included in Mr. Taylor’s TVAAS estimate.”
Taylor received ‘exceeding expectations’ classroom observation scores, but a low value-added estimate reduced his final evaluation score below the requirement to receive the

Sol Stern Thinks Common Core Is About “Rich Curriculum”

April 6, 2014

If one is going to entitle a post, A Sorry Attack on the Common Core, which is what Sol Stern did on March 2, 2014, one should really be certain that one’s logic is flawless.
Otherwise, someone might come along and write a post that rips through those weaknesses in logic and, well, show just how “sorry” a rebuttal the Sorry post is.
There was sooo much to address regarding Stern’s Sorry post that my original draft ran upwards 4,000 words. In order to reduce the length, I cut some sections andincluded them here for those who wish to read on.
Who Is Sol Stern? Setting the Stage
Who is Sol Stern? you ask.
Allow me to provide some background on Stern and his involvements.
Stern is a Manhattan Institute for Policy Research (MI) “scholar.” The MI has a board of trustees noticeably heavy on hedge fund managers; it should come as no surprise that MI promotes ”economic choice”;  ”market-oriented policies,” and “free market ideas.”
In other words, MI is a cousin to the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). ALEC initially opposed CCSS; however, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush stepped in and changed that. Now ALEC “does not stand against” CCSS.
Stern also promotes E.D. Hirsch’s curriculum, Core Knowledge (CK), which was Sol Stern Thinks Common Core Is About “Rich Curriculum” | deutsch29:

The Classroom of the Future: Student Centered or Device Centered? - Living in Dialogue - Education Week Teacher:

The Classroom of the Future: Student Centered or Device Centered?

A basic question is emerging as our schools are urged to embrace the Common Core and the computer-based learning systems aligned to the standards. Are these digital devices becoming central to the classroom -- and coming to dominate the way we teach and learn? And how will this serve our students?
From Bill Gates last month we heard the virtues of the Common Core explained this way:
"If you have 50 different plug types, appliances wouldn't be available and would be very expensive," he said. But once an electric outlet becomes standardized, many companies can design appliances and competition ensues, creating variety and better prices for consumers, he said.
In the classroom, these "appliances" are the tablets and other digital devices now being aggressively sold. Gates explained this model of device-centered  "personalization" last year:
Teachers have not had these tools before. Fragmented standards that differ from state to state and district to district have made it hard for innovators to design tools to reach a wide market. The common core will help change that.
In the classroom of the not-too-far-off future, kids will have computer devices with phenomenal interactive content. This will allow teachers to do what they call "flip the classroom." Instead of learning a concept in class and applying it at home, students would learn
