What If The NAACP Is Actually Right? | The Jose Vilson

What If The NAACP Is Actually Right?

Someone recently tagged me to this piece from What About Our Daughters. I’ll let you read the rest of it on your own, but this is why misinformation is so dangerous:

As I understand it, and readers I invite you to correct me if I’m wrong, charter schools ARE public schools. So the battle isn’t over public school education, but WHO CONTROLS that public school education and the facilities where the children attending the schools are located. And I am also assuming that ALL of the kids in both charter schools and non charter schools in Harlem are children of color so what “protected class” is involved? Everybody is Black or Brown!

According to an editorial written by Jealous (he doesn’t actually write his own work-but anywhoo),

Define “insulting” « Failing Schools

Define “insulting” « Failing Schools

Define “insulting”

Was this an excerpt from The Onion or did Arne Duncan really say
“Diane Ravitch is in denial and she is insulting all of the hardworking teachers, principals and students all across the country who are proving her wrong every day.”?
It sure sounds as if he did if you can read the entirety of the woefully misinformed June 3rd Bloomberg piece by Jonathan Alter without getting sick to your stomach. In reference toRavitch’s questions regarding reports of “miracle” results at schools such as Denver’s Bruce Randolph School, Colorado Senator Mike Johnston is quoted by Alter as follows:

School Tech Connect: Back To The Phones

School Tech Connect: Back To The Phones

Back To The Phones

The legendary Julie Woestehoff has a great little smorgasbord of things everyone can do tomorrow, all of which would take about ten minutes, max.

I'm on it. What with the pension attack I've sat on the sideline of SB620, and it really needs to get signed by the Governor now that he's done finding something to prop up Gery Chico for another couple of years.
There is no reason to believe Governor Quinn will not sign the bill, but it is imperative you call or email him to remind him how important SB620 is to you, your children, your school and our State elected officials who voted in favor of the substance of the bill and that this needs to become law. You may call him at 217-782-0244 or email him through his website: http://www2.illinois.gov/gov/Pages/ContacttheGovernor.aspx. You can even ask for a date in which he’ll be signing the bill. PURE
SB620 would shine a lot of sunlight on the CPS planning process; it's a good counterweight to the plague of mayoral control. CCH has a nice little summary here.

Read the piece; it's nice to read something hopeful once in a while.

Daily Kos: Why I'm marching on July 30

Why I'm marching on July 30

Not only because I am a teacher, but because I am an American. Along with others,

For the future of our children, we demand:

Equitable funding for all public school communities

Equitable funding across all public schools and school systems
Full public funding of family and community support services
Full funding for 21st century school and neighborhood libraries
An end to economically and racially re-segregated schools

An end to high stakes testing used for the purpose of student, teacher, and school evaluation

The use of multiple and varied assessments to evaluate students, teachers, and schools
An end pay per test performance for teachers and administrators
