UCD faculty honor prof who pursues classified papers

Larry Berman, a professor of political science at UC Davis, has been named the 2010 Faculty Research Lecturer by the university's Academic Senate, earning the highest honor the group bestows on outstanding professors.
Berman, a scholar of the Vietnam War and the American presidency, is known for pursuing classified history and using the Freedom of Information Act to help scholars gain access to previously unavailable materials. In 2004, he sued the CIA for access to the president's daily briefs during the Johnson administration.
Berman has been with UC Davis since 1977 and has written or co-authored 12 books.
In 1982, with information obtained from previously classified National Security Council documents, Berman wrote "Planning a Tragedy: The Americanization of the War in Vietnam," which is used in many classroom

Seventeen elementary schools in Sacramento County have been named 2010 California Distinguished Schools by the California Department of Education.
