UCLA Student Alexandra Wallace Releases Apology for Racist Video
March 14, 2011 in Students
Alexandra Wallace, the UCLA student who filmed herself in an anti-Asian YouTube rant over the weekend, has released a statement of apology to the Daily Bruin student newspaper.
In the video, titled “Asians in the Library,” Wallace mocked UCLA’s “hordes” of Asian students, saying that they bring their “moms and their brothers and their sisters and their grandmas and their grandpas and their cousins and everybody that they know” to campus and talk noisily on their cell phones in the library.
Wallace’s imitation of one such student — “Ohhhh, ching chong ling long ting

A Lesson on Blackness from The Fab Five (Jalen x Jimmy x Chris x Ray x Juwan)
Last night, ESPN premiered the much-anticipated documentary “Fab Five” (the behind-the-scenes story of The Fab Five from University of Michigan’s early 90s days) as part of their 30 for 30 sports short docs. Most of my sport fan friends opted to watch this in lieu of sleeping the extra hour we all missed out on. The story of these five boys who were quickly shoved into manhood reminded me of the fanaticism for college basketball my friends found back then, but it also called to mind the implicit separation some groups put on Black athletes with the

News on the Wisconsin Recall Effort
Democrats need to win three of these eight districts in order to regain a majority in the Wisconsin state Senate. As it happens, Democrats currently lead in three districts:
Senator Dan Kapanke trails a generic Democrat 55-41
Senator Randy Hopper trails 49-44
Senator Luther Olsen trails 49-47
In two other districts, incumbent Republicans are under 50%, and should face

Are Americans Really Unwilling To Pay More To Prevent Education Cuts?
In a speech earlier today, President Obama asserted, “We will not cut education,” and implied that doing so would be “reckless” and “irresponsible.” The president’s heartening remark, however, comes as education funding is taking a massive hit at the state and local levels in most states, including New Jersey, Pennsylvania,Florida, and, yes, Wisconsin. The damage will likely last for many years.
In all the debate about what to cut and how deeply, there seems to be an assumption that an increase in revenue for education – to avert these massive cuts – is not an option. Although there are exceptions, very few

Subject: Senate Democrat voting privileges in standing committees
Dear Members,
With the return of the Senate Democrats this weekend, questions have arisen regarding Democrat members’ participation in Senate standing committee public hearings and executive sessions.
Please note that all 14 Democrat senators are still in contempt of the Senate. Therefore, when taking roll call votes on amendments and bills during executive sessions, Senate Democrats’ votes will not be reflected in the Records of Committee Proceedings or the Senate Journal. They are free to attend hearings, listen to testimony, debate legislation, introduce amendments, and cast votes to signal their support/opposition, but those votes will not count, and will not be recorded.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact my office.
Thank you,
Scott Fitzgerald
Senate Majority Leader
13th Senate District

Last Stand for Children Calls for an End to Rewarding More Experienced Education Reformers
You may have noticed that we have not been as active in this blog lately. I would like to apologize for that, but we have had a hard time promoting our reform group. The problem is innovative reformers such as ourselves are constantly finding ourselves cut out of the best paying and highest profile speaking gigs in favor of the usual suspects---Michelle Rhee, Joel Klein, Geoffrey Canada, Checker Finn, Stand for Children, GOOD, SMERSH, Students First, and DFER are well known and hence always have another speaking engagement or paycheck waiting.
The problem is groups like ours who are newer are more innovative. We aren't tied to the same failed policies of reform that haven't worked over the past 10 or
