Portland students plan walkout in response to Trump's education secretary pick



PORTLAND, Ore. – Hundreds of Portland students said they’re interested in joining a walkout in protest President Trump’s appointment of Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education.



According to an event invitation on the Portland Student Action Network’s Facebook page, more than 300 students are planning to meet January 19 at Pioneer Courthouse Square. The walk-out is scheduled for the day before Trump’s inauguration.
On the page, students say they worry DeVos doesn't understand the needs of public schools, and will "accelerate the corporate privatization of education."
After nominating DeVos, the incoming president called her "a brilliant and passionate education advocate.”
Hundreds of Portland Public Schools students walked out of class in November to protest Trump’s election. The students marched across the city alongside leaders of Portland’s Resistance, a group that staged several demonstrations in the wake of election night.Portland students plan walkout in response to Trump's education secretary pick | KATU:
