First Common Core Math Materials Adopted - Year 2014 + Community Eligibility Provision (CA Dept of Education)

First Common Core Math Materials Adopted - Year 2014 (CA Dept of Education):

State Schools Chief Tom Torlakson Announces Adoption
of First Mathematics Materials Aligned to the Common Core

SACRAMENTO—School districts now have a list of more than 30 instructional materials to choose from that are aligned to the Common Core State Standards for mathematics, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced today.
This comes after the State Board of Education completed the 2014 adoption of kindergarten through grade eight mathematics materials for California students. The list is attached.
"Today's step keeps us on track toward our goal of providing students the real- world skills they will need for college and career, in part through the Common Core," Torlakson said. "These quality materials will help students achieve the proficiency in mathematics that California's employers are looking for from this future workforce."
Of the 35 instructional materials programs submitted for consideration from 17 publishers, the State Board of Education approved 31. Of these, 20 were Basic Grade-level programs, 10 were Algebra 1 programs, and one was an Integrated Mathematics 1 program.
Local school districts can now begin their own process of reviewing the materials to determine which of the adopted programs best meet the needs of their students. With such a wide variety of choices, including a number of technology-based programs, districts can tailor an instructional program that will help their students achieve academically. Districts may use some of the $1.25 billion in Common Core State Standards Implementation Funds to purchase the materials.
The adopted programs are on display for public review at Learning Resources Display Centers across the state. For more information about the 2014 Mathematics Adoption process, visit the California Department of Education MathematicsInstructional Materials Web page.

Community Eligibility Provision

The Community Eligibility Provision provides School Nutrition Program sponsors an alternative method for claiming student meals in high poverty schools.

Community Eligibility Provision

The Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) was implemented as a result of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. It is one of the federal provisions to increase access to the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program while decreasing the administrative burden at the Local Educational Agency (LEA) level; specifically through an alternative method for claiming student meals in high poverty schools.
Beginning July 1, 2011, LEAs and schools in Illinois, Kentucky, and Michigan were the first states selected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to pilot the CEP. On July 1, 2012, the USDA added Ohio, New York, District of Columbia, and West Virginia; and on July 1, 2013, they added the final states of Florida, Georgia, Maryland, and Massachusetts. The CEP is available nationwide in School Year 2014−15.
The CDE highly encourages participation in the CEP for a school with an Identified Student Percentage over 40 percent. Identified students are qualified to receive a meal at no cost through Direct Certification, including students certified as homeless, runaway, migrant, foster, children enrolled in a federally funded Head Start program, and nonapplicant students approved by the LEA.
If you have questions regarding the CEP, please contact your School Nutrition Programs (SNP) County Specialist. The SNP County Specialist list is available in the Child Nutrition Information and Payment System Download Forms section, form titled “Caseload SNP.” You may also contact an SNP Office Technician by phone at 916-322-1450, 916-322-3005, or 800-952-5609.
