EWA Innovation Showcase: New Classroom Technology Aims to Inspire, Motivate Students

EWA's 66th National Seminar was recently held at Stanford University, and we asked some of the education reporters attending to contribute blog posts from the sessions. A two-foot high robot crouches on a desk, close to a student seated nearby. They both look at a computer screen that displays math puzzles. The robot, a white-and-orange machine named Projo, confesses he is worried about making mistakes and asks the students to make sure he doesn’t.

In one of the sessions on innovations at EWA’s annual conference, USA Today reporter Greg Toppo promised that Sandra Okita’s research into robots as learning tools would blow our minds. And it was indeed mind-bending to watch her video, in which Projo greets students by name and gives them hints when they get stuck— but not too many.

We often think of robots as the potential perfect assistants who would make no

SOUTH KINGSTOWN — The University of Rhode Island is holding a fall honors colloquium titled “Great Public Schools: Everyone’s right? Everyone’s responsibility?”
In this series of lectures and panel discussions, participants will explore how education matters and debate issues central to the future of public schools and higher education. The events will be held Tuesdays starting at 7:30 p.m. in Edwards Auditorium on the Kingston campus.
The colloquium will kick off Sept. 10 with a keynote address by Richard Rothstein, a research associate with the Economic Policy Institute, called “Grading Education: Getting Accountability Right.”
On Sept. 17, URI will host a panel discussion on education that includes state education Commissioner Deborah A. Gist; Ray DiPasquale, president of the Community College of Rhode Island; state Board of Education Chairwoman Eva-Marie Mancuso; and National Public Radio’s Scott MacKay.
Diane Ravitch, research professor of education at New York University, is the keynote speaker at a forum called “Reign of Terror” that includes members of the Providence Student Union, a student activist group.
Other participants include Geraldine Brooks, who will discuss her novel “Caleb’s Crossing”; Sheryl WuDunn, author of “Half the Sky” and a Pulitizer Prize-winning reporter; and a radio show with Providence Mayor Angel Taveras.
A Nov. 12 panel discussion, “The State of Our Rhode Island Students,” will include leaders of Rhode Island KIDS COUNT, the Economic Progress Institute, Council for Exceptional Children and URI’s Veteran Affairs Program. It will be moderated by Maureen Moakley, a URI professor of political science.
The colloquium is sponsored by URI, Rhode Island Public Radio, the Mark and Donna Ross Honors Colloquium Humanities Endowment and the Thomas Silvia and Shannon Chandley Honors Endowment.

Nobody felt the sting of former state Education Commissioner Tony Bennett’s resignation quite like Jeb Bush.
Bush played a key role in recruiting Bennett from Indiana and was among his most ardent supporters — even after Bennett became entangled in an alleged grade-fixing flap.
When Bennett stepped down on Aug. 1, it was the latest in a string of setbacks for Bush, who has spent the last five years pushing an ambitious education reform agenda across the country. Earlier this summer, Bush’s signature model of grading schools on an A-to-F scale came under attack in Florida. Then came a crushing wave of criticism from tea party groups, which oppose the new national standards Bush is promoting.
The political fallout could be significant. Many observers believe Bush is using his role as national education reformer to position himself for a run at the presidency in 2016. That hinges partly on success in Florida, where Bush created his template for school reform.
Bush, who has ducked questions about his presidential ambitions, did not return an email seeking comment.
When asked what Bennett’s resignation would mean for Bush, Bush spokeswoman Jaryn Emhof said: “The question should be what will the resignation mean for students. Improving student achievement is at the heart of Gov. Bush’s passion for reform and has been for the 20 years he has devoted to this cause.”
The latest polls show Bush in the middle of the pack among potential 2016 Republican presidential

DR Alison Coviello; PhD and Principal Needs to Meet Jiminy Cricket

Isn't there an old adage that goes;
"If you lie, keep it consistent for one day you might get your lies all higgedly piggedly and get caught in a lie that exposes what a pathological untruhful excuse for a human being you truly are and you will get caught."
I might be off by a word or two, but the jist is there.

As all are aware of we at PS 154 in the Bronx are blessed by someone that admittedly never lies in DR Alison Coviello; PhD and Principal. So blessed are we that the lack of lying by DR Alison Coviello; PhD and Principal can be considered Vulcanian in nature.

Back to school means big changes, challenges at LAUSD

The start of classes Tuesday will launch a watershed year for Los Angeles Unified as it rolls out a new curriculum, toughens its graduation requirements and launches an innovative system for dealing with disruptive students.
Coupled with the introduction of iPads-for-all at nearly four dozen schools and the newly approved waiver of the federal No Child Left Behind law, the innovations slated to begin in 2013-14 are expected to transform the educational system for students, teachers and administrators.
"I'm unaware of a moment in public education -- save the time when compulsory attendance went in and when we desegregated our schools -- like the next two years," LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy said. "It's a very big deal."
Driving each of the district initiatives is the desire to have all LAUSD students graduate "college- and career-ready," with the knowledge, skills and ability to support themselves and a family in the years ahead. That means keeping kids in school, getting them help when they struggle and ensuring that all students can get a top-notch education, no matter which campus they attend.
That's also the goal of the Common Core curriculum, the first-ever nationwide set of English and math standards

LEARNING AT ITS BEST

Enough with the Bitching…

Stop bitching. Stop whining. Stop pouting. To be frank, we do too much of the wrong thing while corporate interest continues to do so much of the right thing and all the while, they continue to brainwash youth. While we are all sitting around rallying for justice in the classroom…corporate interest continue to coddle with governmental bodies in hope of gaining from the oppression they impose communities that they could care less about. It seems that we have grown comfortable with “keeping the dialogue going,” actually it seems that we have grown a little too comfortable. In therein lies the issue at hand, because if we have grown that comfortable with talking while children are left unrepresented than we are just as oppressive as our oppressors are.
The reality of the situation is that there are plenty of youth organizations and unions around that do not have their head upside their ass to see the calamity of educational oppression. Yet, when asked to present some actual effort in unifying an actual movement, everyone wants to start stuttering and drawing back. Which again, makes them just as “special interest” as “special interest” because their taking a special interest in speaking from a soap box instead of becoming willing to unite for results.
As far as the organizations that have come out touting their supposed purpose of liberating student voice and uniting oppressed student

"Quality music that deserves to be heard" -- Chuck D (of Public Enemy)

"Throw Away The Key", produced by L.Ment of Canada, is more than just a cry for prison reform -- it is an attack on the entire system of inequality and injustice that is merely exemplified by the racist, classist inequalities in policing and sentencing. Mass Incarceration, Recidivism, Profiling, Stop And Frisk, Police Brutality (e.g., Tremaine McMillian) and Fatality (e.g., Oscar Grant), Political Prisoners. These are symptoms of a greater societal problem. Add income to the equation, via for-profit prisons, and you have modern day slavery. THIS MUST END.

"Throw Away The Key" appears on AWKWORD's 'World View', the first-ever 100% For-Charity Global Hip Hop project, sponsored by DJBooth and The Morgan Stanley Foundation.

Rapper, Activist and Sociologist AWKWORD is one of the "dope artists" putting New York City Hip Hop back on the map (DOPEMusicBlog) — making "quality music that deserves to be heard" (Chuck D of Public Enemy). AWKWORD is also "the heart and soul" of World View (BuckMarleyXXX), the first-ever 100% For-Charity Global Hip Hop Album. Sponsored by The DJ Booth (DJBooth) and The Morgan Stanley Foundation, AWKWORD's "highly anticipated LP World View" (The Source) is designed to connect us worldwide through Hip Hop music & culture. World View features contributions from every continent, approximately 20 countries and every U.S. region. The album boasts production from the likes of Harry Fraud, Domingo and Numonics, and guest emcee appearances from Joell Ortiz, Sean Price, KRS-One, Slug (of Atmosphere), Chino XL, ILL BILL and more.

For AWKWORD, this is nothing new. Today he fights for change through music; his activism began in childhood, with the guidance of his mother (RIP). AWKWORD created his high school's first (now annual) Diversity Day with the Anti-Defamation League. While earning his Bachelor's in Sociology from Vassar, he founded the school's Prison Reform Group, lobbied New York State Congress for the repeal of the Rockefeller Drug Laws and worked or volunteered at Green Haven maximum-security prison, an alternative-to-incarceration center, a probation office and an at-risk youth center. From his World View project, all proceeds are donated to Guns 4 Cameras (Aim to Live), a 501c3-registered nonprofit that goes beyond the gun-exchange program, working to eradicate street violence through the Hip Hop-inspired education and empowerment of our at-risk youth. The organization's founder, Hezues R' was shot at 22 times at age 22 and survived to re-dedicate his life to saving the streets. He and the organization's Spokesperson, Hip Hop icon Pharoahe Monch, have traveled the country speaking to the youth about Hip Hop, making the right choices, and putting down their guns and picking up their cameras (or their pens or their microphones) to be productive instead of destructive. Future plans for the organization include local gun-for-camera exchanges nationwide — and not for cash either, for cameras and inspiration.

LAUSD giving principals, teachers 'live shooter' training

Updated:   08/11/2013 05:06:55 PM PDT

Prompted by last year's massacre in Newtown, Conn., Los Angeles Unified is instructing administrators and faculty in how to keep students safe if there's a gunman on campus.
Steve Zipperman, a retired LAPD captain who is now chief of the district's police force, said principals participated this summer "live-shooter training" that will be shared with teachers in the new school year.
While he declined to share details that could jeopardize campus safety, he said school leaders are being guided on "how to decide in the moment how to save as many lives as possible."
We provided them with alternatives and choices that may be available to them should an active shooting occur, and a traditional lockdown may not be the most appropriate decision," Zipperman noted. "This may mean the rapid relocation of students, either on or off-campus."
The U.S. Department of Education recently released recommendations for developing school emergency plans that included a "live shooter" section. It suggests a protocol to run, hide and -- as a last resort -- fight.
Zipperman believes the recommendations have merit but that some of them would not be appropriate for a K-12 setting.
The recommendations were developed in the wake of the fatal shooting last December of 20 first-graders and

Curriculum and Instruction Policy Committee Mtg, 4-6 pm.  Agenda

A lot of BARs for various partnerships with outside entities for services.  One, for Special Ed services via the Northwest School of Innovative Learning, caught my eye because I know they were being sued in 2011while a student in the Puyallup School District was in their school.  The student's family alleged physical mistreatment.  Might be good if the Directors know the outcome of that lawsuit.

Also, some discussion scheduled for Policy 313, Student Assignment, Policy 2015, Selection/Adoption of Instructional Materials and Policy 2415, High School Graduation Requirements.

Wednesday, August 14th
Executive Committee Meeting - 8:30-10 am.  Agenda
Review of the upcoming Board meetings for August 21st and September 4th.
Discussion around amending Policy 1400 and Policy 6114, and the next Board Retreat.

Policy 1400 is "Meeting Conduct, Order of Business and Quorum."  I find this interesting because this one has already been tweaked so I wonder what else there could be to do.

Policy 6114 is around "Gifts, Grants, Donations & Fundraising Proceeds."  I suspect this may be about the updated policy around PTA fundraising during school hours and a percentage of the proceeds to be given to the school's ASB fund.  (I still do not know for certain who controls the direction of those funds.)

Market-Based Education Rejected in New Studies

Market-Based Education Rejected in New Studies:

New studies reject market-based education

Early preparation gives students an advantage in later school years.

Only 6000 words really matter in the 24-page document, yet they're enough to demolish claims made by politicians and critics of schools about the way to solve the innumerable problems that teachers face every day.
The document also identifies the three key challenges confronting Australian education: children are starting school below their expected level of ability; our top students are not doing as well as their international peers; and the gap between the nation's best students and the worst performers is the biggest among most developed countries.
Academics in Melbourne University's graduate school of education prepared the document as a "green paper". Titled Focusing on the learner: Charting a way forward for Australian education, the paper warns that without significant changes in education policies, Australia is unlikely to achieve the federal government's goal of becoming a top-five nation by 2025 in terms of our students' performance in reading, science and mathematics.
Those policies being by promoted by state and federal governments have cost millions of dollars with little gain in student or teacher learning. They include plans for greater school autonomy, giving parents more choice, and test-based accountability – none of which improve student outcomes, the paper says. Countries with top-performing education systems employ a different mix of policies than Australia, and "quality teaching" is their platform for success.
Too many of Australia's education policies are devoted to matters that ultimately have little
